anyone know of a frame building course anywhere in the north city/county? I'd like to be able to make my own ones for various reasons in the future. I hate trying to find the perfect frame and since I generally prefer wood would be interested in finding out how to make one myself.

That's something I would be interested in myself. I'd love to have the space to set up a workshop and do all my own framing and mounting. Maybe if there was enough interested we could organise our own course?

Maybe. If anyone else is interested, can they leave a message? I don't imagine it'd be a two day course (I don't even know how to use a saw) so I'm guessing we could look at after Christmas for this....we'd all be brilliant for next year's People's Photography.

For anything to do with framing, check out this guy. He's UK based, very helpful if you've no idea where to start. He pointed me in the direction of this book (he doesn't have in stock himself at the moment). It's very good, and explains stuff clearly.

I started making my own frames last year, and while it can be fiddly, it's very satisfying - sorted Christmas presents no end last year!

Incidentally, does anybody know of a source of picture frame mouldings in Ireland?

isn't it just normal moulded timber that's used in framing? I'd imagine you'd get a big selection of such in any Woodies or B&Q.
You could always go the extra mile and buy a router and a few bits and make your own moulds, but that's probably overkill :D

    Ahem... :)

The mouldings in the DIY shops aren't really suitable for frames off the shelf, I do use them but have to at least cut a rebate with a router to take the actual mount. It works fine, but it's time consuming and messy. There must be a source of actual frame mouldings someplace though - I'm sure framing shops aren't out the back slaving over their routers all evening

you're quite right - I didn't think of the rebates for mounts and stuff like that. Must go and do a Live search to see if it's available

They do, but I'm not sure that they supply to non-trade, and they have a pretty hefty minimum order quantity as well. Plus, AFAIK they only supply the bare mouldings .. they're not finished in any way. I tried contacting them a while ago for a small quantity of custom dowelling, and they just weren't interested.

Why not just drop into a framing shop and ask them who their supplier is?

Yeah, found their website and had a look at a few of their suppliers around Waterford, but all they carry is the generic mouldings, not the frame mouldings.

    I might try that

    according to their website:
    Picture Frames

    frames-images.jpgTraditional and contemporary profiles

At Wood Mouldings we make it our business to keep abreast of current fashions and with our ever expanding range of framing profiles we provide the modern picture framer with a wide variety of styles both contemporary and traditional.

    The natural look

We supply all our frames in a natural, unfinished form to allow the framer achieve their desired look without the levels of waste normally associated with pre-finished frames. In addition, we specialise in the manufacture of obeche wood, which is ideally suited to take all kinds of finishes due to its smooth, creamy white, unknotted texture.

    Frames to suit everyone

We have no minimum order, except that you take a full pack, and all purchases of our frame mouldings with a net value in excess of two hundred and fifty Euro in Ireland and five hundred Euro in the UK are delivered free of charge. So, whether you're waxing, liming, staining or painting your frame, check out our range of profiles as there is bound to be one that suits you.

I took that to mean that they would supply directly to you, as long as you took a certain amount

Maybe, but that amount may be more than you'd want. Give them a call and see what they say.

I'd be interested too. If it is more than one would want, but not completely unreasonable, it might be feasible to club together, though the mouldings tend to be long feckers which might make transport after divvying up a problem.
