Ive been dealing with the lads up there for years and could never fault them
in any way always a good deal to be had there. As for the UCALLER i have one but rarely use it instead i use a hand held caller similar to a duck call i dont know the make of it as i have it for over ten years and its fairly worn by now.It looks similar to a bicycle pump thats the nearest description i can think of but it's the best piece of kit ive ever used.

Purchased one of these from LRACTIVE with two SD cards. Excellent piece of kit and well worth the money (although you will require the additional speaker with it). Used it for most vermin without fail.

Called a fox with one of those (the one with the SD cards and external speaker) from a long way off. Was unsure of the legality of shooting using an electronic caller so left it be (maybe someone could enlighten me here???). Anyway when you do get one i would suggest getting good quality batteries as the batteries that came with mine leaked and ruined it after a while.

    Kerbdog,

No legal issue with using electronic caller (just make sure you are legal with shot i.e. distance from road / dwelling, permission etc).
Batteries - I've been using cheap recharg. for over a year with no problems. If you intend using this for foxes, I've found the best method is to place the speaker a few meters (5 or 10) off to your left or right. This usually takes the attention away from lamp source.

Don't think they are legal for game ?

Not sure about fox's but i know they are illegal for game .I know a couple of lads down here that are waiting the outcome of an argument with the local
wildlife officer afaik he is taking it to the courts.

    Foxhunter

Your right under the wildlife acts you cannot use an electronic calling device to call in protected birds (hunted in season) The NARGC have a very useful book written by Des Crofton the name of it escapes me. But everyone who shoots should have access to it.

Let me know how those guys get on, did they know or was it ignorance of the law. You are alright for vermin

They genuinely didn't know .They were calling ducks last year but its still not resolved even after numerous appoligies .The warden is a bit of a stickler on these matters down here i think.

Unfortunately, ignorance is no defence in law !

The retailers shouldn't sell the calls for game IMO. I have an electonic caller with game calls eg mallard but I wouldn't dare use them

I ahd the U caller and the sound quality was more like a kids toy so i got the speaker attachment with about 25 meters of cord and this greatly improved it, i sold it to a friend and got the Lockvogel memory flash s, a far better piece of kit, smaller, lighter and much better than the U caller even with the new speaker. the only thing is it costs about 220,but wort it

no mink on the chip i have but there are about ten different chips each with 8 calls on them sure thered be mink on one of them if there is a mink call, mine includes
    Mallard
    Teal
    Fox 2
    Magpie
    Widgeon
    Fox
    Rabbit
    Crow

Mostly use it for the fox, magpie and crow, they all work

Second you on the crow and magpie bit..haven't been undividedly succesfull on foxes but than again I wouldn't be a fox expert unlike others in here

Would i be right in saying that it is illegal to use the teal, widgeon or duck (in a shooting situation of course)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,777 ✭✭✭meathstevie

You'd be spot on Mellor. It's illegal to use lamps, electronical devices etc etc.. for hunting game but ok for vermin.

I dont think he ment 4 U-callers, he probably just ment 4 different callers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,064 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

The product he sells is called "u-call" not "u-caller"

Vermin if your a Landowner or somebody who has no respect to what they are hunting.

Game if you have respect for what your hunting and you willing to eat it.

    Stevoman

I would eat most anything, but would draw the line at the following:
    Greycrow
    Magpie
    Fox

Squirrel is different tried it during the summer and is ok

I think he was referring to the rabbits mentioned by eoinkildare.

While they are vermin, they are also tasty. Where do I fall in the divide? ;)

don't get me wrong, i love rabbits and think they're a great challenge. just wanted to know if i could lamp rabbits or not! love eating them too. never had squirrel but would try it no bother, just wouldn't know what way to prepare it.
any tips for lamping rabbits? have land, just no experience. i've got my grouping down to a good level, i've shot rabbits plenty of times, but just looking for general advice. very new to the sport and don't know any hunters with experience.

you more than likely will need two people 2 lamp the rabbits. one on the lamp and one on the rifle. Generally lads lamp rabbits using lurchers so they do as they can be a hard target at night, (at least i have found that, but be sure some of the other lads dont have that problem!).
If you want my advice if your new to this is 2 start very eraly i the moring and at aslo at dusk when you still have some light to work ith, its a lot safer. Stay downwind from the rabbits as they'l smell you and be very very quite. try not to come about any nearer than say 40 yards from them, sit tight and wait for a good shot to come along.

remember always head shots! Although a body shot will suffice i find that it can burst the guts and taint the meat. plus a head shot rabbit is an awful lot claener to clean out and skin. hope this helps Eoin, Happy Shooting

    thanks stevoman, all advice welcome!
i'll be doing my shooting on my own generally and so i got a scope mounted light with a switch on the stock of the rifle. great job so it is. would like if it was a bit more powerful but for 50dollars in america you cant go wrong. battery sits in my pocket and so its very light on the gun.

    any more tips welcome!,
    eoin

Only problem with a scope mounted lamp is that you are swinging your rifle all over the place and pointing it at things you don't intend to shoot. I use a small lamp on a strap for searching and then use the scope mounted one for shooting. It's the same principle as using a pair of binoculars and not your rifle scope for searching. If your lamp can be easily clipped on and off the scope then its all the better.
