DIT Poker Kevin St Sucks... Aungier St still trives in glory...

DIT poker society in Kevin Street held a 15e fo on Monday... 10 players entered, and payout was 1st.50e 2nd.30e 3rd.20e.
That means the society took a third of the prizepool.. It wasn't advertised as a 10+5, nor did it advertise that the payout was a mere 66% of the prizepool.

I dont mind reg fees for casino or pub games cos I know the money goes into staff, food, drinks, venue etc. But for a society to take a third of the prizepool is just wrong imo!! I want to name and shame....
I know that DIT Aungier St poker society for the last couple of years have been running really good playable structures with healthy payouts for the table, also have good tables, chips, cards, etc.

Anybody have any views on this??

Thats an absolute farce. Last year Aungier St poker soc didnt take any rake as there is no charge to us, we got funding from the college.
Please could you change the name of the thread from Dit Poker to Kevin St as it will give the other reputable DIT poker socs a bad name.

aww shucks! thanks! as u mightguess from my nick i was more than involved in dit poker soc for the last few years. if you are in DIT aungier st you're more than welcome to take over the poker soc, go to the socs office and talk to Anita Conway about taking it over. Chips, table, cards etc etc are all there and you cna easily get 1000+ in funding to make it better and better and buy new equipment.

Equally, you should mention to anita that taking a 3rd of the prizepool is not on, the kevin st poker lads have funding and their a non-profit student society. they have ZERO need to take any money off the top. If they bullsh1t about taking money for a league or something dont listen to them, ask them to produce records etc etc... i cannot stress enough that they have ZERO need for a reg fee. the clubs and socs office will give 1000+ (as much as 3k if they word their proposal right) to buy stuff, they even paid for the likes of myself, luckylloyd, shoutman, aodea and a few other dit heads to travel to tipperary to play a charity poker game. the college pays for all this, the college take approx 800 euro capitation fee from all students and this is dispursed as funding... NO SOCIETY SHOULD TAKE A REG FEE ON ANY SORT (this is the same for ucd, trinity, dcu, itt, etc etc etc)

I'll report them and see what happens, cause there games are a joke anyway!! Doubt I'd want to take over the society... I'm in 3rd year this year and itd be hard enough to find time around it.

Thanks for the reply I can see all the anger and emotion put into every word!! I have Anita's email, I'll give her a bell and see what the story is....

for anyone running a society, or taking over the dit aungier st soc..
    ________________________________________________________

    Hey,

in DIT we applied for funding through the clubs/socs office. We bought alot of chips from drinkstuff.com and decks of cards. you'll need about ten decks of good cards, say the plastic COPAG cards you'll find on that website. Try and get 1000 chips, with no numbers on them, alot of red alot of blue, some white some black some green. We used red 25, blue 100, white 500, black 1000, green 5000. The structure we played was 5 euro multi rebuy, 2000 starting chips (8 red, 8 blue, 2 white) with rebuys of 2500 (2 black, 1 white) and top up of 3000 (3 black). average spend per player would be about 15 euro, som ewill spend more some will spend less. with the rebuy it means if someone gets knocked out they can keep playing, and 5 euro wont be too expensive for anyone learning etc.

the game we played was from 4pm - 8.30 or so, we had to be out by 9 so we designed the structure to finish by 8.30. anywhere from 15min blinds for larger fields to 15 for early levels, 20 later on worked for smaller fields. we eneded up using a 17min clock right the way through when we were getting 30-40 players.

Wehn setting up send an email to EVERY poker site, pokerstars, fulltilt, paddypower and beg for free stuff.. take anything you can get! try magazines like cardplayer too!

when signing up members try to get their email addresses then every week or two, a few days before a tournament u can send an email to everyone. poster s help too.

5 + 0.50 just gets messy for change. dont bother with it. if u dont get funding from the college (you should tho) just stick with 5euro only for all buyins rebuys and top ups. say you get 30 players, average spend of 15 euro and the prize pool is say 465, just take 25 euro out at the end if you NEED to to cover costs, but make sure everyone knows it too and why its being taken.

What we did instead of the usual 10% payout structure, i.e. top 3 paid if you have 30 runners. is we always paid final table, so say 30 runners, 450 prize pool.

    1 190
    2 100
    3 50
    4 40
    5 20
    6 20
    7 10
    8 10
    9 10

that way it becomes a big deal to "make the final table" even thogh some players might spend 30 and finish 5th and win 20. no one will say winning "ONLY" 190 for 4 hours work is a bad thing.

    hope this helps.

I might reconsider this option but would you have to be in Aungier Street to take it over??

as far as i know even if you are kevin st based you can still run the aungier st poker soc. or if not you could set up the Kevin St Hold'Em Soc, etc etc. in theory they cant actually stop u from setting up any society once you get 10 signatures (i ran 2 diff socs over 4 yr period and not once was i ever actually asked for these 10 "start up" sigs)

Ok cool, i'll talk to Anita about trying to run the Aungier St soc... Who's the current President/Chairman?? I'm sure everything will have to go through him/her first!

Aungier St has much better facilities, think i'd much prefer being in a soc there. Kevin St depresses me!

I'm in Aungier St. and I was wondering what the story was with the lack of posters, etc. so far. I'd definitely be interested in getting the Poker Soc. back up and running too mate. I've sent you a PM about it, see what you think.

we have the email address ditpoker @ gmail . com so if you get set up i'll give you access to that accoutn which also has all the emails we've sent, and some replies and the address book will have all last years members.

accounts in theory should read : "income, zero, expenditure, zero". if anita says you get 1000 in the budget, hop online and spend spend spend... maybe try to leave 300-500 euro for the "committee trip away" which basically is travel expenses paid for a handful to go gamble down the country... MUST BE POKER RELATED! :p

"cash games are not legal" ... what cash games!!?!? :p

I'll participate in the committee trip away :)

its a good trip... didnt happen last year :( but two years back, noteable moments include:
    • bohsman becoming the first player to multi-table live while drinking anywhere from 3-5 bottles of miller
    • luckylloyd shouting a colourful variety of abuse from atop a poker table to a colourful variety of people (not to mention getting me banned from a shop in the middle of nowhere for stealing 8 capri-suns*)
    • shoutman literally losing his balls playing guts
    • shoutman begging for change to get "back in the game"
    • shoutman losing all the change he had managed to beg steal and borrow...

    yea, good trip...

    * lloyd to his credit did eventually produce a receipt to prove he had in fact bought the stolen merchendise...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭shoutman

I ran soooooooo bad at that game. I think I lost my whole drinking/petrol bankroll (about fourty quid) to musician in the space of ten minutes.

I also thought another notable moment was throwing chips across the room (some leaving the room via the open window) and trying to hide them all when the manager of the hotel came up to complain......
