looks like this saturday might be ideal for some early morning mist, which, along with the leaves turning colour, should make for an excuse to get up even earlier than during the week.
I was thinking of heading to Glendalough, but was wondering if there was anywhere in Dublin that has water? As far as I know, there's no lakes or ponds in Phoenix park, which is the only park that I know of will be open at 6 am

there are several; the furry glen, the two ponds near the castleknock gates, and one in the zoo, which won't be accessible.

Corkagh park off the N7 at the kingswood entrance as three-four lakes and the camac running through it. You can park just down from the entrance to the car park on the road safely and its a five min walk to the lakes. No climbing gates or walls. I walk the dog there before it opens and the rangers have no problem with you been in there outside of hours.

Thanks Magic, saves me a long drive ! Whereabouts is the furry glen in the park?

@Bernard, Corkagh park is just past Clondalkin, right?

No man! Golf is infinitely more infuriating than photography. If anything take up fishing. That way you can buy a nice boat, head out into the harbour, throw down the line and get a few hours sleep :D

yeah that Conor , is a pretty damn good photographer , he's not even doing it that long !!

thanks again Magic. I see there's a pretty big river there too, that might come in handy

from my experience shooting mist in the park - along the main avenue is good as the sun is coming up, and then head to the furry glen, as it takes longer for the sun to reach there.

I'm heading to the Phoenix Park on Saturday morning for the sunrise. From what I've seen, there does be quite a gang of photographers around Saturday mornings.

Last Sunday, the place was crawling with them.

This was taken at Quarry Pond, in the Phoenix Park.
It's not the most awe inspiring location.

I fear the answer to this question - how early does one have to go to the PP to catch the sunrise and the misty photos ? And where is best place to go when there !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,063 ✭✭✭GristlyEnd

Sunrise is 7.45am on Saturday so that should give you a good idea. I will be there around 7.15am to get ready.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,048 ✭✭✭RoryW

    Thanks Darren

heading to a friends wedding (person getting married is also called Darren !) on saturday so another time for the PP. Look forward to seeing a post or two of photos that you take .

    7.45?
    Not a hope!
I live near the park & when I left home around 0715 this morning, the sun was up. Can't see anything changing too significantly between now & Saturday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

official sunrise time is 7.45, but as City said, it's already almost fully bright by then. I'm gonna try to get there about 6.30 to give me a chance to scout around and have a cuppa before the 'action' starts.

The action being me realising I'm in the wrong place and rushing to get to the right place only to find that the sun is already fully up and I end up going home with f*ck all!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,063 ✭✭✭GristlyEnd

An even earlier start then :D

I'd be very tempted to go to this if I wasn't going to Waterford this weekend. I've always wanted to go to the park for sunrise/sunset but think it would be unsafe if I went on my own :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭City-Exile

I'm picking someone up from the airport at 0730 so I'll be out on the east coast for 0600. Has anyone any good suggestions for places out around the Malahide/Portmarnock area, which will allow me a quick route back to the airport?

The doggers should be gone by sunrise, so you should be alright. :D

Man, you just reinded me of the last time I was in the park early morning. I parked over at the papal cross car park and there was only one other car there. I noticed when I got out of my car that the engine of the other car was running. I had a look around but I couldn't see anyone, so I walked over to the other car to see what was going on.
It was truly quite a sight that greeted me! A girl/woman was lying on her back, naked on the back seat, her legs wide open and a guy, also naked, asleep face down on the floor, arse sticking up on the central tunnel.
I guess they left the engine on for heat while they were getting it on and then just fell asleep. Drive of shame in the morning.
Anyway, after that the deer didn't really interest me, I just wanted to go home and wash out my eyes with optrex

    cambo_gueno, the unwilling dogger! :D

Come on kids, any suggestions for coastal spots, with quick access to the airport?

Malahide Estuary. Take the Donabate exit on the M1 heading north, then left at the roundabout heading towards Swords. Take a left at the first roundabout (signposted Estuary recycling), cross over the small bridge and take a right. This will bring you to the estuary (under the M1).

I was out at 0630 for work this morning & there was no sign of any sun.
With the clouds, I'd say there was no decent sunrise.
0745 might not be too far off the mark for the Phoenix Park.

Some cracking shots there, almost makes me want to get up earlier!

from the looks of the weather forecast, it will go from partly cloudy to foggy at exactly 5 a.m. tomorrow morn in Dublin.
I'll have a look out the window at 6 and if it's cloudly I'll be back in bed...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭City-Exile

I have to get up anyway go to the airport, so I'll just lump my gear into the car.
Will be in Bray tonight, for a game, so I'll look out for this myth that you get sunsets on the east coast. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

of course we get sunsets on the east coast. You just that either they're very good or you can't see them :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭City-Exile

Just back there but there was nothing worth photographing.
    Terrible light!

phew! I had fully intended going out, but I went out for a pint after work yesterday and time got away from me. I couldn't have even held a camera this morning, nevermind take any pictures...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,063 ✭✭✭GristlyEnd

The light was dissapointing but the deer where playing up so I got a good few of them in rut.

I only just came across this thread now. Thanks for the kind words earlier on.TBh, it's better if there is cloud about on sunrises, even rain cos it turns the skies all sorts of colours.here's one i got the other week in bray and it was totally overcast when i got there, but i got a break a good while after sunrise.

    1485408453_a2248c7ab7_o.jpg

And here's one of Corkagh Park this week, on thurs i think.

    1561786858_c23d5a559a_o.jpg

I learnt that even if it's pissing down when you get up and leave, it might be grand for shooting whern you get there. That light in corkagh lasted exactly 5 mins cos i times it.But even if it lasts for an hour, if you're not there , you're not gonna catch it.i do a lot of early morning photography because i like the kind of light I see.But the really great light rarely lasts longer than 10 mins absoilute max.
