Am off to Rome for a long weekend at the start of February (1st to 5th).

Any recommendations on hotels? Would ideally like one somewhat central but not too noisy and with breakfast included (big perk for me, as i'd never eat after i left the hotel until lunch).

Also, any recommendations on where to visit in Rome (apart from the obvious Vatican City)?

    Much appreciated all.

This probably won't help but a couple of years ago we stayed in en excellent little hotel in Plaza Venecia. Very reasonable 3 star hotel with continental breakfast. Booked it through needahotel.com

It was very close to pretty much all the touristy things (Colliseum, Trevi Fountains etc). Even if I can't get the name of that hotel, I'd recommend that area to stay in

i have completely forgotten the names of the hotels i have stayed in rome (sorry) but i can recommend:

St Peters/Vatican (queues for Vatican can be annoying though)
    Trevi Fountain
    Colosseum
    Spanish Steps
    Pantheon
    Roman Forum
    Villa Borghese

I booked Hotel Alimandi for my parents earflier this year after a friend recommended it and they only had good things to say about the place, and particularly the staff. It's less than 2 minutes walk from the Vatican and they have a shuttle service to and from the airport.

I stayed in Hotel Astrid, it's 2 mins walk from the Tram stop beside the Stadio Flamino, 5 to 8 mins on Tram to Popolo.
Breakfast included, on a balcony with nice views of the city. And they included some snacks for free in the mini bar as a snack when you were out walking.

Nice place, staff spoke better english than me, and very freindly, arranged taxi at 4am to get us to the airport!

Cheers for all the recommendations all. Completely forgot about this thread so will give the places recommended a look.

I suppose i'm in no rush for accomodation as it's not til February but in saying that, i'd be the one to leave it til the last minute so no harm in looking now.

    Thanks again!

I too am thinking of Rome, except to send my parents there! I was looking at the Radisson, it's in the Esquille district (I think?) near the train station ... is that fairly central?

Thanks, sorry for hijacking thread :)

That would be very central, close to the Colloseum and Forum, but near the train station is noisy, not just trains, but there's a big market nearby also, so trucks and traffic generally.

    Hey

Here's where the hotel is, it's the Radisson I'm looking at - http://www.radissonsas.com/cs/Satellite/Page/RadissonSAS/Page/rsasLocation/1095159825909/en/hotelCode--romzh/
    There's a map there of where it's located ...

    Hey Tinkerbell,

I stayed in the Radisson Rome for a month on a work trip back in February,
and I wouldn't really recommend it! This'll sound like a bit of a rant, but
it wasn't the worst place I've stayed!

    1) The rooms are odd to say the least, there's a glass partition (plain glass,
not frosted) between the bed area and the shower, and a frosted glass door through to the toilet!

    2) It's right beside the back end of the train station, great for the airport
train, but at the far end of the station from the ticket office and entrance
to the metro, a good ten minute walk.
There is another metro stop just around the corner though.

    3) It's a bit of a grim area, perfectly safe in my opinion, but I know a
couple of people who didn't fancy walking around it at night (but it's at
the back end of a train station so you'd expect that!).

    4) I had a room facing away from the train station so didn't hear any noise,
but spoke to people who wereon the other side and they said it was pretty bad.

    5) There are mad coloured lights on the courtyard in the middle, so
if your facing inwards your room could be bathed in neon green/pink/etc
    all night!

Good points: close to a quiet metro station and a spar, the buffet breakfast
was very good, and the staff were really friendly!
Interesting, but not a place I'd have stayed in were it not paid for, and
    earning me points!

Myself and the missus stayed in the Hotel Forte on Via Margutta. It's literally right beside the Spanish Steps. Very small but nice. Breakfast included in price.

Great City. We went the first week of February this year. Weather was cracking for the time of year. So many things to see. And no queues bcoz its off season. We basically strolled straight into the Vatican and the Colosseum etc. We'll defo go back! Even if ur not big into it,you cant but be impressed by the buildings and general architecture. Even the building where the local Spar was located was savage! lol! You'll have a ball!

I don't know about hotels and things like that (I was there as a back-packer) and I can't argue with any of the sites that have been suggested (in particular the Unknown Soldiers tomb and the Trevei fountain) but my best advice would be to not use a map and just walk aimlessly through the city, seriously! Some of the buildings (particularly churches) that you randomly find down side-streets are just amazing! Especially when you are in the older areas of the city near the Colluseum, amazing stuff!
