Alfa - Stereo Install

My stereo install is finished but I don't have all the pics so I'll update as I get them!

The Alfa GTJ has a headunit in it, a Motorola LW/MW with Alfa Romeo written on it, but it was not hooked up to anything. In fact there was no aerial mounted on the car at all.

I know the engine sounds nice and all that but on longer drives a radio is nice too!

But I didn't want to impact the car in any significant way and needed a discreet install.

Having done an install on me previous Merc (and I only fried 1 radio in the process!) I decided to have a go.

First off... I didn't want speakers visible anywhere. There was space to mount them against the firewall, but there were not enclosed and sounded rubbish. Another option was in the centre console, but I felt fitting was a bit tight and I wasn't sure I could do a neat job with restricted access etc.

So I settled on the rear parcel shelf.

When I took out the parcel shelf it consisted of layers of PVC, foam, and card and actually had cutouts for a previous install. And the holes were the exact size of the speakers I had bought:

The rear shelf also had two nice big holes. I just had to cut out the recently installed carpet covering:

I will cover the process of mounting the speakers into those holes later.

So, I wanted this to be discreet and wasn't keen on having two big speaker grills on show.

So I obtained some hollow punches (search ebay for pics).

I then obtained a pizza pan with a nice radial pattern like this:

    And marked out a template:

used the hollow punches to produce:

    and

I think they look rather well!!! almost factory. You wouldn't know there were there really!!

I alos have a discreet aerial and hidden headunit which I will take photos of and post up.

No comments about the slightly wobbly hole spacing on the right please!

Hey that looks nice and neat ......well done !

I must say I hate the thought of cutting into old cars for audio equipment, your install looks good !

Yes I am the same. This way it's just a bit of vinyl that has been altered, which probably isn't original anyway!

I have to admit that Benjamin of Lichtenberg Classics gave me some ideas!
