    Hi there,

I have an eight year old boy who is interested in having a pen pal. Any suggestions to a 'safe' link/website for appropriate connections. The irony being snail mail and not email. Just not sure where to go.

Any advice or information is gratefully accepted.

Do you have any friends or relatives with a child of a similar age living in another country? When I was a child I used to write to my second cousin (same age) who lived in England. It was great, I really enjoyed writing those letters and getting letters of my own in the post. Maybe England doesn't seem far enough away to kids nowadays though! :)

PS: I think it's great that he wants to use the good old snail mail. Too many kids/teenagers rely on spell-check and/or text-speak nowadays! :)

Is it possible for your school to link up 'pen pals' with another school elsewhere. I certainly remember when I was around that age our schools arranging pen pals

yes my school operated a similar scheme in conjunction with a Finnish company who specialised in arranging pen pals. That was many moons ago but the school is definitely a point of contact.

Thanks for that guys, I hadn't thought of going through the school. The only thing about that is he is eager to pen pal now so I want to strike while the iron is hot. The school may take a time to organise it.

    thanks anyway

That company was called International youth Service. I got a few penpals from this organisation back in 1984, and got to travel to Spain and Germany as a result! It's very cheap, too.

How about trying other parenting websites? I got my daughter a penpal through one of them.
Not sure if I'm allowed to post links so I won't just incase.
