NTL and Netopia router

I've just had NTL come and install the net at my place. They forgot the wireless router which we needed as we have two laptops. We have a Netopia 3347WG which was formerly distributed by eircom i believe. Tried hooking it up, but no joy.

What do i need to do to use this with the ntl connection?

Thanks in advance for any help.

That's an ADSL router. You need a different router, often called a cable router. It doesn't have a modem in it. Instead, you connect your NTL modem to the uplink port of the router and then connect devices to it either wired or wirelessly. A top model for what you want is the Linksys WRT54G/WRT54GS/WRT54GL [just variants of the same model; I'd go for the GL, GS or G in that order of preference].

EDIT: here's a link with lots of reviews.

    Thanks.

Had no patience so went to Maplins yesterday. Dixons guys sent me there. Said Maplins would sort me as they 'specialise' with wireless routers for NTL.???

So, bought an AzureWave IEEE 802.11 b/g 4 port router. Guy said it would connect up fine.

For some reason it isn't picking up the net, though it says the connection is there. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron (centrino) by the way, with the wireless capability in-built.

My flatmate hasn't had any luck trying to get this up either.

    Are we missing something?

Not familiar with that brand but as long as it does the job. So you've connected the modem to the router's uplink port [not one of the other four ports].

Have you configured the router from its web interface? You'll need to enter the router's admin username and password to make such changes. These should be well documented in documentation with the product.

Set the router to receive its Internet/WAN IP address by DHCP.

Also, if you'll be using wireless with that laptop, make sure you use WPA-PSK encryption on the router along with a strong password.
