Stepping up from A1 to A licence

Hi guys I currently have a Majesty 125 with a full A1 licence for the last 4 years. I have a few questions, what is the procedure in getting an A licence (I might like to get a bigger bike someday, maybe  ).

Firstly do I have to sit the driver theory test again, will I be allowed to drive on the M50 if I have to get a provisional A licence (I drive it twice a day hence the scooter  ).

Secondly can I sit the test on a bigger scooter, I've seen a few bigger scooters on the road or will I have to take it on a normal geared bike, I'll be honest I have no real intention of ever driving one.

Thirdly as a wussy scooter driver (as I've been called :( ) am I wasting my time stepping up to an A licence.

    Cheers guys

125's aint allowed on a Motorway as far as I know but never stopped me in my 125 days:cool:

borrowing or renting a 250 might be the way to go for your test, I'd have no idea where it stands for a scoot..

    125s are ok

and if you're legally fully licensed to drive your current bike, you can say that its the license you're using while driving on the motorway ;)

not too sure about the theory test...

dont think you will have to the theory test again but you will be asked on your rotr again cos of the changes.

i *think* its possible to do an automatic full a test but if you then move to a gear bike you will have to do it again.

Im also thinking of moving to a big scooter. hopefully a yamaha x-max 250

Looks like you may have to do the theory test again. Their money hungry in the DTTS. I asked about getting an A and D test and they said I'd have to do both, even though the D licence theory test has all the parts from A, B and D.

If I wish to add a category to my current driving licence will I have to do a theory test before I can get a provisional licence in that category?
Yes, if it is your first provisional licence in that category and you have not previously obtained a theory test certificate and submitted it to your licencing authority in respect of that category.

If you stick to the 125 scooter then you can still drive on motorways, provided you don't let the licence lapse for more then 5/10 years can't remember which.

As for your other questions. It'd be better for you to do the test on a geared bike and whats the harm in getting a A licence, then you can ride any bike you want. It could come in handy later in life.

I had to do the theory test again when I applied for my A licence. You have to do it every time you add a category to your licence. Having a full A licence might also save you money on insurance.

There is a new theory test now specifically for bikes. The old one was common to cars and bikes, so if that's the one you did for your A1 licence, you'll almost certainly have to take the new theory test to get your A provisional.

If you've no intention of getting a bike bigger than 125 (or getting a geared 125) there is no point getting the A licence at this stage, tbh.

If you do want to do it, then you might as well do it on a 250 geared bike as this will cover you for anything you might want in the future. If you wait 2 years after passing, you won't even have the restriction rules to worry about. You can train for, and take, the test on a school bike.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.
