My DVD player that came with my less than 6 month old Dell for some reason has stopped working this morning. I've barely used it accept for the last day or so when I've been trying out an ubuntu Live CD and GPart Live but the very last thing I did with it was run the Vista installation CD without installing instead only to alt-f10 out to a command line at the product key screen to try and get diskpart to shrink my drive (i know this can be done with Vista running but I thought I would have better luck running it when booting off disc).

Whenever I boot the computer now it's telling me that port-00 and port-01 are controlled by the raid BIOS but I didn't go anywhere near raid and I also only have one HD. It's also telling me that no drive can be found in slot 0 SATA driver and to press F1 to continue or f2 to enter setup.

Whenever I put CDs into the drive nothing comes up under Computer and I've tried entering D:\ into the addrerss bar but nothing happens. I also looked under Device Management/Disk Drives to see if there's a problem but it definitely doesn't even appear in the list of drives. The only thing I can think to do is reinstall the driver but Vista isn't even telling me its located a new device and anyway shouldn't the DVD player run with a standard driver Vista Ultimate comes with/downloads automatically when it detects a new device. I thought I'd ask before trying to install a new driver.

I'm working towards formatting the driver and either just installing ubuntu or a dual boot with Vista but even if I were to format the drive by somehow getting one of the installation discs to work this wouldn't solver the issues I get when booting the computer because that's not part of the OS, right?

    Comments appreciated!
