difference between conservatory and an extension

    hi all just looking for a bit of advice.
    i'm thinking of getting a conservatory and the rep came out. he suggested that i knock down the dining room wall and have that room going into the conservatory.i'm a bit unsure about this, i personally thought this would then be an extension.
    any ideas?

    Unless you build the conservatory inside the house it will be classed as an extension of (or to) the house

    All conservatories are extensions but not all extensions are conservatories.

    The exception to this is the internal conservatory that muffler built, lovely thing it is :)

    A conservatory consists mostly of glass, a sunroom basically is a combination of glass and blockwork but also has at least one window per wall! They both are classed as extensions!

    Thought a greenhouse might be best un-attached to a house, maximising sun by having all four walls exposesd and no shadow cast of a house! my opinion anyways. Therefor fallin under un habital dwelling, which would prob not even need planning!
    Think sunlounge is the same as a sunroom!

    Well, a un-attched greenhouse would be best,
    but it not possible would an adjoining greenhouse be an extension or a sun box?

    And "unhabitable dwelling" is a bit of an oxymoran isn't it.

    when attaching to house, if you have an access door directly from the house think most plannig athorites would class it as an extension! but if you only have access to it from outside i think its o.k

    No, if you have access from outside its still an extension, this is good as the other option is shed type structure are limits for exemption are lower


    To get back on a serious note, incase this thread is a point of reference for someone in the future

    A conservatory (sunroom etc) is classed as an extension and under the same limitations as as such, if an conservatory breeches these limits, (floor area, garden area, position reletive to house), it will require planning premission

    Detached structures (greenhouse, shed, etc) are classed as sheds and under the same limitations as as such, if an greenhouse breeches these limits, (floor area, garden area, position reletive to house), it will require planning premission also
