Quick question really about tipping. heading to new york in few weeks time. have read up on the net about the amount you should tip etc but how do you go about tipping the bell hop or concierge? will they stand at the door of your room til you hand then something or do you try to secretly pass it to him in a handshake?
Do you also leave some money out for room service and if so, is it just on a locker or do i need to arrange a load of bedside lamps around to highlight it?
at least i dont feel weird tipping a barman for providing me with my next pint

    thanks in advance

I stay in US hotels all the time and never tip more that a couple dollars for someone to bring my car around/ carry my luggage up etc
Don't be secretive, just have a couple ready in your hand and give them to the person and say thanks.

Maybe I seem a scrooge but hey, these guys meet +50 ppl/day. Even if everyone gave just a dollar that's still a load of dosh at the end of the week.

Why can't people carry their own bag?!

guess 2 dollars saves the awkward moment trying to beat someone to removing your luggage from the cab

    edit: thanks biko btw

Because the doorman will have it out of your taxi before its stopped. I think the "rule" is one dollar per bag. A couple of dollars if he hails a cab for you is another one.

Didn't tip room cleaners but in the past have left coins, small notes on bedside locker

Ahhh, I all hotels I've stayed in in the USA I've never actually been in one where there was someone to carry my bags :)

A couple of dollars should be fine though :)

for the room cleaners they say you should add up the amount of days you stayed at the end and leave 2 dollars for each day.
but i always leave a couple of dollars out every day so you know that the person cleaning it that day gets it, rather than leaving a large sum on the last day for the person who happens to be working that day. its more fair that way.

A couple of dollars if they hail a cab for you.

If they bring your bag up to your room, then a few dollars (a dollar a bag for example).

For lifting your bag out of a car to the curb I wouldn't tip.. Just say to them that you've 'got your own bag thanks'...

Some hotels already include tips/service charge for room service. Check that out on the menu/information booklet in your room. If it doesn't mention it, i'd tip a few dollars..
