Irish horror films.

There's actually quite a few Irish horror films, as so:

    Isolation
    Bog Bodies
    Shrooms
    Dead Meat
    Boy Eats Girl

Anyway, I've found that on some other horror related message boards, they're being discussed often enough. Ok, they're not very good films, by any stretch of the imagination, but it does seem that Ireland is stepping into the horror genre, and there's quite a few people out there who are quite interested in the subject. How long before we see a seriously good Irish horror film? Most of the films above are pretty silly ones, but I think there's plenty of scope for a good ghost story, along the lines of The Devil's Backbone.

Hmm... Who's going to step up and make one, eh?

Hmm never heard of Bog Bodies, must look that one up.

You could also add Rawhead Rex to that list. Brutal film though.

I've always thought that Ireland would be a fantastic location for a decent horror film. Theres so many creepy location and desolate farmhouses, dodgy looking back roads, Old Castles and the like. Even newgrange !

I think the locations were put to best use in Dead Meat but it kind of bombed because its humour really only appeared to the Irish themselves. I guess theres not that huge a horor following in the country still.

Theres also a couple of more local horror films, Theres a couple filmed around the Waterford area called "The Hidden" & "The Hidden 2".

They were done by a company down in DUngarvan called "Kirby Productions", only found out about them myself recently, will seriously have to get some of their stuff. Here's their site if your interested -
    http://www.kirbyfilms.com/index.htm

Just contacted them recently about acquiring some of their films, ill let you know how I get on.

They seem to have a new one coming out soon called "The Breakdown" that sounds pretty cool.

Theres also a couple of boardsies in the process of doing a horror film, I think its set in Dublin. (DerekP11 and Niallon I think are the boardsies involved). There were trailers etc posted up on the board somewhere but I cant find them now. Havent heard how their progress has been going in a bit now that I think about it ....

EDIT - I was just thinking there afterwards, I actually saw a couple of short films on TG4 that leaned towards a horror/paranormal theme. All done totally in the irish language of course. Cant remember the names of any of them but they werent too bad IIRC.

Boy Eats Girl is one of the worst films I have ever seen

What's 'Shrooms' all about/. I've seen posters around cineworld Dublin for it.

    Shrooms:
Having been promised the 'trip' of a lifetime by their Irish friend and mushroom expert Jake, a group of American teenagers arrives in Ireland, keen for adventure. Despite Jake's warnings about the 'shrooms they shouldn't eat, things start to go horribly wrong and the teenagers suffer horrific visions. The panicked friends are attacked by ghostly creatures, never sure whether they are experiencing gruesome reality or startling hallucinations. As the group is bloodily whittled down to one, it is soon clear that, whether or not these apparitions are real, the carnage they leave behind certainly is.

Had a quick flick through it, either there wasnt an awful lot of action or I was just catching the lulls between the killings. Didnt look bad, but not overly great either. Will get around to watching it in full soon.

Thanks for the mention. We made a short promo for our horror feature idea, "Conscious". It wasn't a trailer. The project is currently undergoing a rewrite as we continue to put the funding in place. It is still scheduled to shoot in 2008. We think it is very original in terms of "Irish horror films". Its not an attempt to emulate American product. We are concentrating on character development, good storytelling, uncomfortable visuals and good old fashioned scariness.

We are about to shoot our first short horror film over the forthcoming October bank holiday weekend.

Folks can keep up to date with us via our web site.

I have to say Shrooms looks terrible judging from the trailer I saw at Black Sheep. Absolutely terrible. :(

I was suprised to find that it's the director of I Went Down who's directing Shrooms. Who knows, it could be good for a laugh?

Our short, "DeadWeed" has finished principal photography as of yesterday. Into post production and we should have a finished product as soon as we can!
