I don't know a whole lot about this area and would really want to know more before I consider anything.

Really what I'm looking for is a book that explains investments,

    particularly.....

how to track prices and to best judge when to invest
something that explains what are good and bad things to invest in
    calculating risk vrs reward

There's a million books out there but so many are written by hacks and aimed at people looking to get rich that I really would like a recommondation on what to read.

    many thanks in advance

A Random Walk Down Wall Street by Malkiel is a good book to start with. Gives some good strategies for long term wealth creation etc... a life cycle guide to investing, explains how risk is calculated/assessed and gives and overview of some investment categories + lots more. Can't go wrong with that one in IMHO.
