Advice for using external flash

I got my job as a photographer for next year. I will have to use a flash for some of it and I have never used a flash before (inbuilt or external). I intend to purchase the Canon 430ex in the near future. What's the best way to get my head around using the flash? Is it using the one on the camera first or waiting to get the speedlite?

Last night I was messing around with the inbuilt flash on the camera, set it on Auto took some shots, set it on Av took some shots and then setting it on Manual and taking shots. The ones on Manual by far came out the best, but I was completely guessing what settings to use. I'm finding it hard to know what the exposure should be when using the flash.

If anyone has any advice or links to tutorials I'd be very grateful.

    Cheers
    L
