With all this talk about Eddie O’Sullivan after the World Cup, I haven’t heard anything about the main issues hampering Irish Rugby, namely the AIL and the PAG.

The AIL badly need to reform as a Super 10 or 12 with minimum representation from each province and a pyramid system beneath it on a national, provincial or mixed basis. It also needs to sort out its relationship with the provinces so that fringe provincial and developing players get game time.

And then there’s the PAG. I actually think it’s a great idea but they simply don’t seem to be doing their jobs. We’re short on players mainly in three positions, namely prop, outhalf and inside centre. Yet what happened with this year in these positions? Gomez (who looked rubbish on Friday), Le Roux and Morris are brought in, while Pucciarello gets a new contract. What about giving Hurley, Ryan, Healy & McGovern a go? At outhalf, Leinster and Connaught have foreigners while Munster’s second choice is Australian and it remains to be seen whether Ulster give Wallace and O’Conner a real go ahead of Humphreys. We saw at the world cup how badly we need cover at out half. Meanwhile at centre, Tipoki and Dewey were bought in this summer while Mel Deane came back to Connaught.

If the PAG was doing its job, these positions would be protected and home grown players developed. I know it might mean short term pain for the provinces as some of the home grown players are not top class, but how else can we develop players? Moreover, the PAG should be enforcing player “resettlement” to spread around the talent among the four provinces.
