Could anyone tell me what the music exam for incoming first years is like? I presume it comprises of aural dictation, melody and harmony, and counterpoint, but I can't seem to find much information on it. Does anyone know if the orchestral society has a concert harpist?

Dorchestra does indeed have use concert harpists but it all depends on the repetoire for the year.
The exam itself is piss easy if you have anything past grade 6 theory associated board. The dictation is Junior Cert Level-ish and the harmony and counterpoint stuff is very simple. The essay is the part which most people fall down on. It very simple the only emphasis to remember is your love of music, the joy of performance and a basic knowledge of the classical world.
    Hope it helps

A grade 6 (or above) knowledge of scales (especially melodic+harmonic minor), block harmony and decent melody writting will help. Single honour and TSM students do not have to write an essay, that's only for entrants to the Music for Education degree. It also very much helps if you come to the open day and sit the mock exam. Train your ear for the aural dictation too. Last year's one wasn't too bad, the melody was almost like a Bach prelude, predictable but rather fast. Make sure you know your key signatures e.t.c. too. Hope that helps.
