Just trying to get used to the different settings on the camera and set this to monochrome and was happy with the result. Any comments would be helpful:

pity it was so overcast today, definately has potential. I'd crop some of the trees and sky and the top.

Yep, the sky was pretty cat today. I'd get closer in on the fountain as well, it's kind of lost in the middle of the frame there. Maybe concentrate on a particular feature of it instead of going for the whole thing as it were.

    Thanks

Yeah weather was horrible, if I hadn't damaged my foot on Friday I would've gone in yesterday. Instead I was limping around all day yesterday and today.

I think you could have done with a more shallow depth of field.
The fountain itself isn't particularly interesting & the background is quite distracting.
I don't know what camera you use, but it's better to shoot in RAW and then convert to B&W afterwards.
What I have done before is to take the shot in Monocrome, just to get an idea of what it would be like, then take it again in RAW, so that I can process it afterwards.

I have the Canon EOS 400D. Only beginning to get to grips with DSLR photography and in fact just starting to take photographs and increasing my interest.

I certainly wasn't suggesting that you give up. Play around with the aperture settings. Set your camera to AV mode & turn the dial to get the lowest possible number. Then adjust it gradually & notice the difference in your shots.

When you're taking a picture of something, you want it to stand out & be noticed. If you can have a blurred background, it will help to make your subject stand out.

No chance of me giving up ;) Ever since I got it I just want to get out there and photograph everything.
