I'm not going to vote because I think the poll is a bad idea: buy what you need. Although I will offer some advise based on my own experience.

    1) Buy the least amount of RAM you can from Apple. Apple, like most manufacturers, charge way over the odds for RAM. If you require more than the minimum amount, I'd recommend http:/www.crucial.com, it's much cheaper and just as good.

    2) Same goes for the hard drive. If you need a bigger one, buy off Komplett and either get an external enclosure for the original one or sell it to make some money back.

Now, the processor and optical drive are a different story, since they're not easily replaced. Personally, I've been working off a 1.83 GHz Core Duo and it works fine for most things, including recording TV programmes with EyeTV and running Photoshop in Windows alongside OS X with VMWare Fusion. It could be a little snappier starting up and waking from sleep, but overall it's fine. If you're going to be doing a lot of music or video editing, go for the 2.16GHz processor, otherwise I'd say the 2.0 GHz will be fine.

Regarding the optical drive, again, it depends on what you need. If you burn a lot of DVDs then obviously you'll want a SuperDrive. I've got a Combo Drive myself and since I've yet to burn a DVD since I bought my Mac, I'm perfectly happy. Bear in mind that you can always buy an external DVD burner if you really need it (or indeed save your image as a .iso, transfer to a friend or family member's PC with a DVD burner and burn it from there).

Being sensible about the hardware you buy will give you the extra cash to spend on stuff you will need. For starters, I'd buy a keyboard and screen protector. Biggest mistake I made was not buying something like this. The result is some small scratches on the screen, which could be a lot worse but could potentially devalue my Mac. And don't forget that you'll either need Mac equivalents of a lot of the software you've used on Windows, or you'll need to buy a copy of Windows itself. Then, you may decide to run this via VMWare Fusion or Parallels rather than Bootcamp for convenience. If you're sensible about hardware, you'll be able to afford this stuff.

Lastly, if you don't need your Mac straight away, I'd hold off at this stage till Leopard is released. It's due this month :D

Like it's been said before, get what you need. It depends on what you'll want it for really but I recently bought a 2.16Ghz, 120GB HDD, 1GB of Ram Macbook and I'm very happy with it so far.

Tell us what you need it for and then we'll give more advice....
