I was down on East Wall today, taking a few in the glorious weather .
I took this one , of a girl smiling from a balcony - any criticism positive or negative , as i'm not sure if it works .
Theme of photograph would be life in inner city dublin

I'm not sure about this one, Barry.
Perhaps it's because there's so much white.
I can see exactly what you wanted here, but the little girl isn't noticeable enough.
Could you crop it tighter, so that you have the balcony is filling more of the frame?

There is something in the picture, but the walls are really too bright. The girls is being lost in the picture and that's a pity.
Please, try some post processing to make her more visible.

I actually like the stark contrast of the bright walls here, but with some reservations. I really like the geometry of the shot, the shapes in the railing are great and I like that the composition is angled. I think the girl is very out of place here. To me this shot comes across well as an abstract stark bw shot about shape and light and for me, personally, the girl detracts from that.

thanks guys - i actually like the anonymity of it , where the girl is partly hidden -- its kind of growing on me -- and thinking it could make the 52 cut for the expo -- think its a grower :)

I think if this was viewed on black it would definitely be a quality shot.. I think with so much white and then viewing it on a white screen it drains the shot..
On another note, I think I would be too afraid to take this shot, Baz do you ever feel uncomfortable? Due to the world we live in its a sad fact I would not take pictures of kids.. Do you ever have in problems with this baz?? Big fan of your work by the way..

I use the Cloud skin here on boards, so I was already viewing it on a black background. I still stand by my original opinion.

another one that i like , along with one or 2 admirers is this

Again many don't like the pale frame , but i think this natural frame highlights the subject.

Regarding taking shots of children, if the intention is good and there is no hint of ambiguity, i don't see a problem . Colman Doyle and Fergus Bourke took photos of children , and they were very powerfull , if people have a problem with natural innocent photographs of children , that is there problem . If people are looking for obsene/abusive photos of children , i am sure they can get them from other sources, and not from good intetioned photographs. Just my thoughts .:)

I prefer that one. It's obvious that the tighter framing is a positive.

i cant for the life of me think of anywhere in eastwall where there is a block of flats like that?.,lol,
looks kinda like the old liberty house.

Also isnt it illegal to take photos of children without their parents permission? i remember being told this when doing a photography course in school a few years ago.,

No its no illegal , it a case of taste , in this instance the child is partly hidden by the bar , which i think improves photograph.
Photos in improper taste ( you know what i mean) are rightly illegal.
