Help - have I killed my PC?

    Hi,

I've been trying to turn my old desktop into a media centre pc.

Today I installed my TV Tuner card and that worked like a dream (my first time to ever open up a PC and replace something like this).

I also had a wireless card that I wanted to insert. I was having trouble finding space to install due to other cards being in the way. I removed my graphics card and then inserted the wireless card and replaced the graphics card. However, upon startup, there is nothing coming up on my monitor at all. I don't know if my gfx card hasn't been re-inserted properly or if it is broken or if something more serious like the motherboard is gone.

Is there any way I can tell? I do need to get a new gfx card anyway but don't wanna do this if it turns out I've killed my pc

Any help/advice most appreciated (and I was so happy at getting my TV tuner working and recording scrubs to my PC this evening :-) )

    thanks,

    Al

Take all apadter cards out, and put in gfx first, boot up if it work power down and check the rest in that way. Until you find the offending adapter card.

What does it do at boot up?

Does the PC beep in any way?

(I won't ask if you reconnected the monitor and it's powered on 'cos nobody ever makes that mistake (not more than once or twice))

    no beeps!

the power light comes on and stays on

the hard drive light flashes briefly once at start and not again

don't hear any hard disk activity - but can hear computer fans whirring away

Monitor is plugged in and connected - worth asking the obvious questions anyway, just in case :-)

monitor goes to sleep. WHen I remove the monitor cable from VGA out on graphics card, a message "check video cable" appears on monitor, suggesting that it knows it has been connected previously (but no output)

Have you reset the Bios (F2 or Del) at startup and load defaults. If still nothing reset the Cmos jumper on the Mainboard, check the manual for where to find this.

    Hi all,

I have found the problem. When removing all the adapter cards today, I noticed that I had previously unseated my only memory module.

When i re-inserted this and re-started, everything worked again.

    thanks again for your help
