Been a while since I shot anything. Was out today in the park and thought would give this a go.

I know the initials would be better left out, but its my 'web thing'! And I know its easily removed, but I just like to add something for flickr. ;)

    Anyway, all thoughts/feedback appreciated. Thanks.

*edit [inserted rotated image as Im happier with it and just in case people don't like to scroll hehe]

That is deadly ,the rose almost stands out of the frame:)

The soft, pale tones are just yummy against the black background. Very delicate - the dof is pretty much perfect to show some texture in the petals there too. It's like porcelain, almost glowy :D

If you're looking for problems... I have two little reservations about it, maybe. It's kind of floating in mid air - but I don't see how you would have avoided that without clutter in the background. It depends how you look at it too. The other thing is just that the tilt of the flower makes it seem like it's "looking out of the frame" if that makes sense, kind of pointing down and left and it's a little uncomfortable in terms of framing from that perspective. But with a black background, you could shift it, if you felt like it, and it wouldn't be a problem...

Thanks guys! I apprecite the posts. Glad ye like it. I was a bit reluctant to go bw on this one because its very like "that daisy shot" I have but I just reckoned it worked best in mono.

Yup see what you mean. It pretty much is 'floating' I guess. I shot it from above at 2.8 with spot metering so all the bark/foliage etc on the ground was barely visible in the shot.

Hmmm very interesting, thanks. See, this is where my lack of messing in PS leaves me out in the cold ;) I understand the point you are making but im not sure how to go about 'shifting' it like you say - do you just mean to transform it?

    Thanks Julie, helpful thoughts.

Welcome back. Such a photo to post - totally brilliant. Really well done. I do think that some form of stalk or something might just add a little to the image. Otherwise, brilliant.

If you did want to shift it up and right a bit, you could just use the crop tool - if you pull the handles outside the current canvas it will extend it - just hold down shift while you drag to keep the square aspect ratio - when i said it was easy i meant because it's on the black background, you can add some space with no problem at all. Just a suggestion though!

Rotated... I think I prefer this. There was something I wasnt happy about with the first version and I just couldnt figure out what. Im starting to get happier :D

I'm off to trek some rosies meself.

Never have I felt so Gay! :D

Yep, prefer the rotated version, I guess we're used to seeing roses looking up at us rather than pointing down like the first one is.
    Congrats, back in style :)

And then tear them to shreds in photoshop too?

Sorry to disappoint Steve, but the only photoshopping here is converting the RAW to grayscale, little bit of contrast adjustment and then rotating it.

Cheers Mr R! Been shooting some nice things yourself by the looks of it :)

Haha, you mean Oriel, right? Anyway, trust me, you don't disappoint me.

Did you take the photo at night, with a soft spotlight?

    Beautiful picture, 440Hz.
I can see what elven means though.
If you imagine the frame as a 3D box, then the rose was looking out the left side, as opposed to looking out the front.
That's not a fault though, it's just about personal preference.

Yeah thanks City-Exile. I do agree with the point, I just dont know how to do it. Contrary to some people's beliefs Im not a PS whizz! I can do a certain amount but dont know much about manipulating an image in that way. But I do try and follow instructions :)

Great shot Katie. It has an almost 3D rendered effect, and the texture is great.

Thanks Pete. I was actually surprised myself that some of the detail in the rose, the veins etc, was preserved in the conversion. I had thought about burning those areas a little to bring them up but I like the dubtle shadows and gray areas as they are so decided not to go messing with it.

Another take on this shot (low res). The reason I took the shot in the first place was I wanted to take a photo of a yellow rose. I prefer the bw but something I really like about the colour version too.
