Patients defaulting on bills

Hi, a quick topic for discussion and / or friendly debate.
Have any of the professionals here had a marked experience of patients defaulting on paying for their treatment?

I know of one person ("friend" of brother) that had a complete treatment plan done, agreed to pay in full at the end and has refused to acknowledge bills since. This person's reasoning is that a debt collection society cannot force him to do so legally. Awful mindset, not to mention the ridiculous justification.

Is this common in the workplace or few and far between?

I've never been to a dentist where I *haven't* had to pay up front.
