I've got a desktop pc which I'd like to set up in the living room as a media centre for watching movies, tv shows, etc. Anyway, I'm looking for some way to allow me to access folders and files remotely, from about 5m away. Will an wireless mouse do the trick or are their ranges too short? What are the other options?

A wireless mouse/keyboard will allow you control the actual PC from a good bit away, yes. But did you want to control it from another PC? If so they a mouse/keyboard is no use and some sort of software solution can be used.

If its XP the enabling Remote Desktop on the media center will allow this. If its not then google VNC, Dameware, UltraVNC and see what you can find.

Don't need to control one PC from another. I literally only want to be able to access folders from a distance of 5 metres, instead of the usual 10cm away a mouse would be from the tower. Looking for a cheap solution and I thought a wireless mouse would be great is it had a long enough range

    wireless mouse would work fine,

you may need to use a mousemat if its an ir mouse and if your going to use it on a shiny surface (polished/laminated wood, glass)

or buy a windows media remote off ebay, they're about €25.
