I'd quite like to get into doing this but am not having much luck on google finding any club that does it.
Is this a solitary sport where people meet up at races mostly?

If there are clubs for runners doing this, are there any based in Wicklow (preferably) or south Co Dublin?
I'm certainly not anywhere fit enough to consider competition running yet so am hoping there are clubs that take beginners and educate them in proper mountain running techniques, map reading etc and where I can train with other beginners until my fitness reaches a level that allows me to run all over the place :)

http://www.imra.ie/ would be your first port of call, I'd imagine.

    Yep, thanks Alun.

I was reading that earlier but they seem to be a overall sport governing body rather than a club, their links section seems to have a lot of broken links or non mountain running ones, maybe there isnt such a thing as a dedicated mountain running club?.

Was hoping there might be a few runners here that could point me in the right direction.

I know a lot of the regulars over on www.climbing.ie are into their mountain running. You could ask there as well.

IMRA isn't a club, but I think to many runners it functions a bit like one - lots of people run who are just members of IMRA, and not any particular club, and that's a fine way to start.
The Wednesday evening series of mountain runs in spring are very approachable, and social, and if you go and do a couple of them you'll get to meet other runners, particularly if you carpool.

There's a huge variety of abilities on the Wednesday evening league - just look at the range in results of previous races, and you'll see what I mean (results available on the IMRA website) so you don't need to be hugely fit before coming on those runs. Many people walk up the mountains, rather than run, until they get a bit fitter.

Regarding learning navigation, an orienteering club is probably a better bet for that - Setanta http://www.setantaorienteers.org/ just finished a course a few weeks ago, they do orienteering and hill running, they have an orienteering event on this weekend in wicklow.
As pointed out, the hill running season is just winding down - so either wait till spring, or consider orienteering in the meanwhile - the leinster orienteering season is starting properly this weekend...
