    Hi all,

I have a bottle of Imperial Gran Reserva Rioja Cosecha 1994, I was told that it was one of the best years.
Could somebody tell me if there is a suggested year to drink this wine ????
Any idea of the value of the wine ????

    Thankyou

I don't know that exact wine but '94 was an outstanding year for Riojas. A good Rioja should last between 15 and 20 years before it starts to decline. But then this does depend on an awful lot of other factors such as conditions, grape variety etc.... With perfect conditions this wine should last up until 2014 (don't quote me on that!)

1994 aged Riojas are drinking well now. Yes, it was a stellar vintage. Gran Reservas are only produced in exceptional years. I had six bottles of Rioja Reserva 1994 (Vina Ijalba) earlier this year and every bottle was perfection.

Does the bodega have a website? If so, it should give info on its wines and when they should be drunk.

If I were you, I'd be inclined to wait for a chilly November evening (this year!) and open it up with a nice meal. Matching food and wine isn't the be-all-and-end-all, but with a good wine like this, keep it simple. Roast red meat and veg, nothing excessively strong flavoured.

At a guess, I'd say the wine falls into the E45-E60 bracket.
