Anyone have any suggestions for repelling cats, the local stray cat keeps leaving paw marks all over the seat and tank on my bike

They seem to stay away from clear bottles of water.

Spread thin layers of dog faeces on the seat.
    That'll do the trick.

    Tie Dog to bike.

    Make bike smell of Lemon.

Increase alarm motion sensor sensitivity. Mine used to give off the warning if I placed my gloves on my seat. Turned it down a notch since.

Vaporub works too - my cat hates the smell of it. I put blobs of it on our gate (on the bottom where you can't see) and cats don't come in.. Actually why not get a cover for the bike..?

Another tip is to put Vaporub on the cats* for hours and hours of endless fun :D

Don't do this, its mean and I really love cats, but not in that way.

    Must...resist...urge...to...post...cat...pics...

I read somewhere that cats don't like citrus. So if you go some lemon juice on a cloth and rub it around the saddly, it should keep the cat away and you wouldn't really smell it.

The last time I had a cover for a bike the exhaust melted a big hole in it!

Besides if I just let the bike cool down before I put the cover on, the cat will already have gotten on to it. I think it likes the heat.

I also use it every day, and living on the 5th floor while the bike is in the basement means a trek to put on a cover.

    I'll try the lemon/citrus idea.

There's also a pepper powder that you can use to deter dogs and cats..
Sprinkle it liberally on the ground around where you keep the bike..

I used to have a canvas bike cover, that didn't melt on the exhaust.. It also had breathable panels to prevent condensation inside the cover.. Problem is that cats used to love to sit eon the bike cover.. Not as harmful as the bike, but still annoying.

    shoot them

    set them on fire

    electrocute them

kill one & place its rotting corpse on your bike to deter the rest of them

    get a cover

any of these options will do the trick

I always put the cover straight on mine (apart from when some fooker decides to steal it ) and it has never melted. The oem cans get hotter than aftermarket ones, so maybe you need an upgrade?

I've looked at aftermarket cans but I haven't found any that suit the style of my bike without leaving one side looking weird. It's a BMW F650GS.

Might check with the dealer about a cover, but I'd say I'll have to sell an arm and a leg for it

get a cheap cover & put some heat resistant tape on the inside, or wait till the bike cools a bit

there used to be cats near where my dad lived when he was a young fella, and at night when he'd come home theyd nestle aroudn the cooling bike engine for warmth. when he took a week off work midwinter one time and didnt use the bike the cats all died in the cold.

if you remained seated on the bike the cat wouldnt come near.

E750 for new cans and E25 for a cheapish cover or E60 for a heat resistant cover. I think I'll be getting a heat resistent cover.

maybe an obvious question, but - what's wrong with cats ? - unless you're planning to lick the seat, I see no issue.........:)

I do find ours prefers the Road King over the Aprilia, and she can climb it without activating the motion sensor. :o

I don't particularly like cat fur, dust and oil all over me! Cat fur also makes me sneeze.

I think a cover is looking pretty appealing.

Anyone got any suggestions for where I could pick up a decent cover this weekend?

I've heard the Oxford Stormex is supposed to be the business:

    Pricey though.

Cats hate citronella oil and paprika.

If that doesnt work get a large capacitor from an electric lawnmower. Connect fine electrical wire to it then charge it up and place the wire on your seat. That may not be such a good idea though cos you ll forget about it and fry your nuts. :D It would be nice zapping the cat though but again, maybe such a good idea cos you will have to wash cat cr@p off your seat.

    You could...

    -A: shoot it

-B: Throw dangerous objects at it

-C: Get a cover for the bike

    or

    -D: Get a Dog...

I quote from the wonderful advice contained on what can only be described as a cat friendly cat deterrent site :)

"Cats are not keen on the smell of citrus either. So you could try using orange or lemon peel in your yard as a deterrent. Similarly some folks advocate coffee grounds, blood meal, cayenne pepper, lavender oil, lemon grass oil, citronella oil, peppermint oil and eucalyptus oil".

For further similar advice have a look yourself http://www.cat-repellant.info/html/diy-cat-deterrents.htm or alternatively for endless hours of fun watching cats back-flip try one of these http://www.diytools.co.uk/diy/Main/p-1118-ultrasonic-cat-scarer.asp but you will need a power supply. Well worth the few yoyos just for the acrobatics.

Be careful of the moggies, they can move on to using your seat as a scratchpost if they get too comfortable.
If your cover is too loose or has space over the seat (like on cruisers with tall windscreens) they can crawl underneath and cause even more damage clawing their way up to the seat as opposed to the clear jump they could get without a cover.

Lemon works for me, but i learnt the hard way and had to get a seat re-covered before i bothered with it.
