the 'artistic' filters in photoshop are bloody awful.
there's no way in hell you'd end up with a picture nearly as good as a well executed pencil sketch.

I never said anything about using the fiters. There are other ways. This works for Photoshop CS2, should work with CS1 and CS3 also.

1 - DUPLICATE the background layer
2 - Press D to reset the default colours
    3 - Click on IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>GRADIENT MAP
4 - Click OK in the Gradient Map dialog box
    5 - Click FILTER>BLUR>SMART BLUR
6 - Type 35 in the RADIUS field & 35 in the THRESHOLD field
    7 - Click the QUALITY pop-up & select HIGH
8 - Click the MODE pop-up & select EDGE ONLY
    9 - Click OK
    10 - Go to IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>INVERT

BTW If anyone is interested I'll put up the tutorial in PDF form with all the screen grabs

Okey dokey. Click on this link and and you'll see the PDF link at the top of the page.

It's a 2 pager, saved as a low res Adobe Acrobat PDF that comes from my notes for the Beginners Photoshop Course we run. Feel free to share it with whoever you think might like it,

    Dave
