Argh! I can't open my iPod. Am I just supposed to slide a credit card down the edge for a while?

I have a 4G iPod, exact same as the iPod Photo minus colour i think.
What I did to open mine was get a thin guitar pick and stick it between the white plastic and silver about 2/3 of the way down from the top of the case.
This made a small gap, I then stuck a thin screwdriver and just kept wiggling it around.

Theres a nice guide with pictures Here

I started at the top by the headphones jack and just keep making the gap bigger and go down the sides. I done this to my 3G iPod that hasn't worked in about 18 months, cleaned it a bit, put it back together and it's working again!!! Pity there's a huge crack covering the whole screen!

Hmm... I've dismantled 3G and 4G ipods (the iPod photos seems to be physically almost identical to the photo) - it's easier to open than the 3G as there are fewer clips inside. The plectrum/guitar pick idea is a good one - using a screwdriver or knife makes the risk of stabbing yourself pretty high when you do this. I found it's easiest to squeeze the iPod in such a way that you're pushing the front and rear parts of the case in opposite directions (thereby, hopefully, opening a crack along one side) and sticking a plectrum into the gap, and (carefully) running it around. You may find it handy to have two plectra/ums, so that you can keep the gap open to avoid getting pinched as the case tries to close again. I've had my best results squeezing (and therefore opening) around the middle of the long side of the case as there's more material to flex that way 'round.

Also, don't pull the front and back halves of the case apart very far to begin with (i.e. separate the two pieces carefully), or you'll probably rip the cable feeding the headphone jack & hold switch.

    Hope this helps,
    Gadget

Just wondering, first of all to the OP of this thread --- I have a video ipod, i bought it last november, it is 30GB and i got apple to print my name on it --- OP , how long have you your video ipod and are you replacing the battery ??

I read somewhere in the ipod help section ( apple.com) that if you charge your ipod all the time even when it needs no charging, your ipod battery will last for 8 or 9 years. But if you let it run out all the time your battery will last only 2 or 3 years.

Also if you send your ipod to apple for a new battery you may get a different ipod back. But i am safe, i will get mine back as my name is on it and apple printed it on the ipod. i hope that is 9 years down the road.

The one major BIG BIG BIG flaw with ipod is that apple made it difficult to open and replace the battery. Steve Jobs is always saying in his world trade shows that apple listen to their customers, i am sure many people have mentioned to apple about the difficulty opening ipods. It makes no sense for a company to lock the battery away and make it difficult to replace !!!!!!!
