Dropping Airport Extreme Wireless Network

I'm new to mac and getting acquainted with my new iMac. Researched anti-virus and decided I didn't need it but followed advice from old threads to make sure Firewall was on and certain settings on Safari were on or off as recommended. Discovered my Firewall was off, so I turned it on. After doing so, I started to have problems with my Airport Extreme wireless network. The signal went to non-existent and when I tried to reconnect it wasn't immediately available to me. After 20 secs or so I got a message saying that none of my Preferred (may have been "secure" or something else - can't remember) networks were available but would I like to connect with the Extreme network. It would then come on with the usual signal strength but would disappear again within a minute or so. Note that when I was setting up the Extreme, I didn't use any security as I was getting clashes with the Netopia router/modem that I was using as a modem only. This is not really a security issue as I am out in the sticks with no close neighbours on a narrow country road.
    Any ideas anyone??

Sounds like a problem I had a while ago. I think it came down to having set WEP or WPA encryption on it, then couldn't log back on. Check your router settings to see if this is enabled.

I get this problem all the time with my MBP at home but never in Galway. Have both networks setup in pretty much the same way. The other MBP in the house never has a problem... random! I haven't found the answer yet but it annoys the crap outta me I must say. :(

Got Apple support earlier tonight. Basically he told me that I didn't need Firewall and to turn off if it was causing me a problem and establish a firewall at the modem. Pushed him further and he suggested that if I wanted to leave the Firewall on I might try enabling FTP access. My impression was that he knew that it was a fuzzy problem with no easy fix over phone support.
What are the risks if I turn off Firewall??
