I received a hauppauge win tv pvr 500MCE today, but it has this extra part in the box :

what exactly is this for and does this plug into the header 1 slot on the pvr 500 or directly to the pc board?

It's a daughter card that gives you secondary inputs as far as I recall..
Not much use to you in MCE, but could be used with WinTV2000 or whatever Hauppauge's native application is called.. There's also a Hauppauge input-switching application, that you can call from MCE, to swap inputs, but you're still stuck with one EPG.

It would plug into the PVR board.

If you want to have two separate inputs from 2 different digital set-top boxes, you simply need to add that part. If you are using basic analogue cable, just plug the cable into the card (extra part not needed), and it will feed both tuners on the card (meaning you can watch one channel while recording another etc.).

thanks for the replies - I have digital cable on a chorus set top box, and have it connected to the card (scart to red/white/yellow in). So do I assume that this will only feed one tuner on the card, and I won't be able to watch one channel while recording another etc?

I've bought a few of the hauppauge cards over the years, non-oem and oem and never got one, nice that they do supply them sometimes
