Seems it uses Navteq maps, these any use?

Navteq is as good as it gets in ireland, which is very good. Try the gps forum to see has anyone any experience with this model.

    Ordered one... :)

Forgot about the VAT of course - that ups the price to €133... but still seems like a deal.

    Another review here.

Yup - got it yesterday. Smaller and lighter than I thought - which is great.

Took it out on the DART home from town yesterday - straight out of the box tracked myself a few a stops. I'd no idea these things were so simple to use. Charged it up fully last night (off a PC vis USB) so will give the voice command system a go in the car over the weekend.

Fingers crossed seems like a good deal indeed. Thanks for the heads-up. :)

How can I hack this GPS to run Tom Tom?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,267 ✭✭✭mcgovern

Anyone manage to hack it to TomTom and has anyone tried a long journey?
According to one of the reviews it can takes forever to compute some journeys and refuses to do others.

Looks like a great price, but if the reviews are correct about route calculation, then it doesn't seem like great value after all.
Is there anyway to increase the unit memory to address this?
    AFAIK it only has 64mb...

There's an SD card slot (with adaptor for the two sizes).

    Hi The Atheist,

Just wondering if you took this out on the road and what are the maps like. I purchased one at the weekend and would like to know how good it is.

    Thanks

    Hey bazual,

Never got a chance to test it proper over the weekend. Need to get the cradle set up first. I will post back when I've given it a real try.

    CHEERS.

When I see the name Binatone, all I can think of is this :D

    Binatone%20Colour%20TV%20Game%20MK%2010%20Model%2001-4842_www.JPG

    and this

    2007_1.png

It was the Sat Nav of it's time

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,340 ✭✭✭Cmar-Ireland

There's an SD card slot (with adaptor for the two sizes).

But it is the system memory that is used to calculate journeys and reroutes. I don't think this can be upgraded?
The SD slot is just for loading maps.

    Edit:
I'm not slagging off the system, I'd love to buy one at this price. But there is not much point if it cannot calculate journeys effectively

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,558 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

Jeez I don't know tbh. I've never used one of these things before, and have no time to play at the moment.

My gut feeling is that if you are serious about your Sat Nav then maybe look elsewhere. I just like gadgets and that price tickled my fancy. That said it may turn out to be everything it should be...

I picked one up, seems ok so far. If nothing else its handy to have a detailed map for ireland the uk in such a small box. havent taken it out on the road properly yet

I'm really curious to hear how this works for a long distance journey. I would love to pick one up at this price. It's more of a novelty than a necessity, so a system costing 1/3 of the regular one would do nicely ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,638 ✭✭✭bombidol

Its definatly slow, i mean scrolling on the map isnt instant. can take a second or two. The processing of journeys can take a minute or so but thats not too bad at all.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,340 ✭✭✭Cmar-Ireland

What if you input a route and then divert off course, will it recalculate quickly?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,723 ✭✭✭bazual

Hi Folks just a follow up.

This arrived yesterday and tried it out last night it did not seem to have any issue calculating routes but I was going only a small distance. It has 2007 navteq maps which are pretty detailed and it has the placename where I am from in Kilkenny. Only problem I found with it is that is was difficult to find places by typing them in, it had towns and villages that exist in Kilkenny being shown as waterford.
Not sure if a few Waterford people paid the Navteq people to do this with the whole city border thing going on.

To summarise, for €133 its a pretty good Sat Nav and will do the basics for ya.
