    Right

i reckon facebook was summed up in an email from a friend i actually keep in contact with

"Who the F*&K is Mary Murphy?" (names have been changed)

Mary had put a friend request in to both of us...but we didnt know who she was

turns out she was in school with us..but we didnt remember who the hell she was

so We've cancelled out accounts and are going on the lash this weekend

Theres a reason you lose contact with people..plus i was wasting away hours in work...

I don't understand people who are 'addicted' to Facebook, Bebo or MySpace. I use Facebook now and again because it's a great way to keep in touch with friends at home and abroad. Anyway, who deletes their account because they get a friend request from someone they don't really know? I guess you don't use Skype so, seeing as friends requests seem to pop up all the time from 18 year old Asian girls (they do for me anyway! :p ). Facebook is better than Bebo in that regard as there's a lot more privacy.

As above, I've found facebook a good way of getting back in touch with people you haven't spoken to in a while for various reasons, and people that you used to work with etc. I don't understand "addiction" to it though. It's not like there's much to do on it.

I receive the add friend request from people I don't know - but I do know that there's someone with my exact name who has very similar interests and apparently looks similar to me, so I just ignore these requests or tell anyone who contacts me that I'm not the person they're looking for.

So someone who you used to be in school with sends you a freind request which then causes you to delete your account. I thought that was part of the point of those type of sites?

Is this going to turn in to another Bebo/Facebook/My Space are shi.te threads? Cause we really don't have enough of them!

I cancelled my facebook account after about 2 weeks, mainly because its ****e.
Bebo may only be for kids and paedos, but at least its a bit more fun than the ****ing bore-a-thon that is facebook. Myspace is better than both tho.

My point is that this girl, while in the same year was in a different class to me and my friend

i had nothing against her but we never spoke, we had different groups of friends and i havent seen her since i walked out the door of the place 11 years ago

NOW she decides that she wants to reach out and touch? come on?

the people i want to keep in touch with are the ones who came to my wedding, the ones who i help move a new fridge, the ones who will drop over for a bit of dinner on a wednesday

Not some randomer who's trying to increase her online friend count

    Rant over

    Cancelled your facebook account? Congratulations.

So far today, I've checked my e-mail, my Bebo, fantasy team and boards. Worth a thread?

Hardly sounds like a randomer. Sounds more like she just hung out at the non-cool end of the playground and you don't want your real freinds to know that this 'looser' has tried to make contact with you now. Where's the harm?

I'd have no problem with hearing from people I went to school with and seeing whats happening in thier lives now if they were my buddies at school or not, I suspect that a few of those from one of my previous schools would not be aware of what the interweb is though or they are currently residing in "state accomodation".

It was more like me at the other end of the playground to be honest:o

It had nothing to do with the "cool gang" mentality it was a big school and you cant be friends with everyone.

but now that we have facebook myspace and bebo we're all supposed to give eachother group hugs,

    i'm not buying that anymore

Again another pointless thread about someone who doesn't like a social networking site telling everyone in his virtual world (the boards.ie) about how lame it is..
If I have to use the word Irony one more time this week i'll ...(shakes fist !)

    i knew this was coming...

personally i see a big difference between Boards and sites like Bebo and facebook

a site like this in my view is there to allow for discussion and exchange of views on chosen topics

Its not self publication in the same sense as social newtorking.

Did you not see the title of your own thread ? 'Finally Cancelled MY Facebook account .' how is that not self publication ? people will assign your name 'giftgrub' with a certain personality based on your comments and posts. In fact alot of your friends who are on this site will know your username.
So they still know who you are.

People have blogs on facebook and bebo etc.. Is that not the same thing as starting a discussion ?

I agree that boards.ie is a different type of site..but some people use it like they use facebook...it's a matter of personal opinion if it's good or bad.
