New Compact Digi

I'm trying to decide what compact digi to get as a present for someone. They've a basic understanding of a point and shoot but I wouldn't trust them with the finer points of a DSLR.

I'm seeing alot of 'hybrid' looking cameras these days; they look like SLRs but are actually point and shoot (though they have some control over ISO and in some cases, aperture/shutter speed).

So if anyone could recommend camera - lets say 7 Mp or more, preferably this side of 300 bills, that'd be cool.

How compact does it have to be, the title of the thread suggests you want something small, but the content suggests you are thinking about a bridge model.

If its a bridge you want I have had good experience with the Fuji s5000 series.

Ah bridge refers to the slr shaped ones? Size isn't an issue, I was just referring to something that isn't as complex as a fully functional slr.

lumix fz8 is small, well featured, and controls are pretty good (has simple mode)

something like the canon ixus 950 might be worth looking at

I'm a Nikon dSLR shooter but love the Canon Powershots... really versatile and come with a slightly larger zoom than normal.

They have some great manual settings too (puts dSLRs to shame when it comes to setting custom white balance!) All the normal scene modes are there for those who just want snaps.

I second the suggestion for the Panasonic Lumix FZ-series of cameras. its a fixed lens very versatile camera. They also come with Leica lenses. I have one and it is great. big zoom on it too. and image stablizing.

    For example... http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/483661-REG/Panasonic_DMC_FZ8K_Lumix_DMC_FZ8_Digital_Camera.html

I'll second that - I have a Powershot A610 & the image quality is excellent, plenty of manual over-ride as well as all the automatic settings.

I was looking at Bridge Cameras a while ago and the Panasonic mentioned above was popular. The Fuji are also good, get the "highest" number you can afford. For your budget the S5700 sounds about right. The Kodak is also popular. Check a post I previously put up on some research and comments received at:

I finally got a Fuji S9600, which i love, although it was outside my original budget of €300 new, I picked it up Second Hand from Gumtree for that exact ame price!

    Good Luck with purchasing...

if it's a fit in your pocket job , and you're not afraid of "creative settings" ( AKA manual mode) the fuji f30 or f31 has served me quite well.
great for those low lit (pub) shots where i wouldnt bring my expensive kit.

edit : i paid 200 euro for mine , came with a 1 gb card and a case.
