Merc W124 Steering Pump

Just wonder if anyone knows the power steering pumps that are used in a Merc 200 (1988). The one in mine has knackered pulley bearings. My local mechanic told me the whole steering pump would have to be replaced which is expensive. However from looking at it, the pump looks like it could be dismantled and refurbished. Has anyone any info/ experience on this.

There is a repair kit availabale, however it contains various seals but no bearings. This either means the bearings are standard and commercially available or else they cannot be seperated.

If you advise me of you chassis number via PM I will try to get more info !

Thanks MercMad, I will send you a PM this evening when I get my hands on the chassis number. The engine type is M102.922 if that is any help in the meantime.
Do you know if opening the pump at home as a DIY job is feasable or should it only be done by a pro?

If MercMad Can confirm that the pump can be dissembled at home and if you can get the bearing out, you can probably get a replacement bearing from this company
    http://www.dicksonbearings.ie/
They will require the serial no. of the bearing which is usually stamped on the side.

I've used them for wheel bearings in the past with great success.
I'll come clean here and admit that thew are owned by a very good pal, Ian Dickson, But one-off bearings is not really the business they are in, I just thought they may be able to help if you are stuck.

Have you used them for Triumph wheel bearings ?
Mine are a bit whiney but they need special tools to disassemble, apparently (hence most people just replace the whole hub or stub axle at huuuuge cost)

No frank, it was for a boat trailer.
I heard that about the problems with Triumph wheel bearings alright.

I do business with Dicksons every day ! They buy a lot of stuff from us and vice versa. Definitely the place to go for any/all bearings !

Also the bearing number, type number, can be written on the visible face of the bearing so you can check P&D without disassembling.

From what I can see the bearing is part of the, or at least pressed into the front mounting flange. The flange comes off but it doesn't show the bearing. I have a suspicion that this means it cannot be removed.

Any Mercedes bearings I have come across have always been standard bearings, and I got the internal Gearbox bearings for my Pagoda SL from Dicksons, only 2 was a special order, the rest from stock.

To be honest, it isn't terribly difficult to remove and strip the pump, but on some models you cannot get the pulley off the pump without removing the rad, and the oil cooler etc.......so it becomes a pain.

May be better to look for a good used one, but with the chassis number I may get better info !

Just sent you a PM with the chassis no.
I don't mind going through the process of stripping the pump even if I can't get the bearing out. This car is not my daily driver so I can have it parked up for a while and sort out jobs like this. I will seek out a second hand pump if needs be.

There is this one on ebay
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=330169253547&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=014

which seems OK value but from the info the seller gives it seems that would not fit my car. It seems odd that they would have different pumps for the M102 engine?
