Playing in WSOP

Ok, I know its like talking about Christmas in June, but humour me. I'll likely be going to Vegas next Summer on holiday independent of poker, and I'd like to have a pop at the $1500 NLHE event that was won by the Irish guy this year...

Firstly, what's the best way to get in. Is the +EV way to just play $11+R sats ad infinitum, given that I'm not a bad tournament player and have done ok in rebuy sats up to now (Maybe shootouts or freezeout sats?). I have a feeling the standard in WSOP sat might be lower than your average Sunday Million or WarmUp sat.
Or would it be better to just bite the bullet and stump up the entry?

Second, whats the standard like in that event? Are we talking similar to an average Sunday donkament. Would it be a reasonable assumption that HoH strategy + running good = ITM? And I cant seem to find the structure online....How does it compare with the main event structure, which seems very deep for a long time?

    Lastly, anyone else going?

I dont know many sites that run sats for the side events at the WSOP.

Open a new A/C, lodge $200 and set yourself a target of turning that into $1,500 by next wsop.

Really? I thought Stars would be littered with sats for every event...

When you win a SAT you can use the amount you win for any event a lot of people used the $10k SAT wins to buy into a few smaller events and then play the big one if they had any cashes in the smaller events.

No but you could buy into a few of them with W$

AFAIK The 1500 buy in has 1500 starting chips and the same structure applies for all events Which can be found and the official wsop site

    Just google it

No, this was changed last year to double chips for each $, so 3k chips for $1.5k this event. It works better for the smaller events I believe.

I just found the blind structure for that event online, and it says it started at 25/50. A 60 BB starting stack? Even a bloody SnG gives you more than that!

The structure for the side events has always been awful. I wouldn't bother playing it

Full Tilt run satellites to the smaller events - they usually give you something like $2000 in tournament entry chips (which since the US legislation = cash anyway)

Also there are single table satellites running in the RIO pretty much round the clock and the standard in them is absolutely horrific. I would estimate that an ROI of at least +30% is possible. They are a bit crapshooty though and generally winner takes all so v high variance and may not be what youre after

If i was in your position I would set myself the goal of earning $1500 in the next year from whatever type of game you play(or put aside an extra $1500 in a different poker a/c) and use that to buy in.

I think the standard in these events is similar to what youd find in a €100-300tournament in Dublin, although every name player/internet kid in the world will probably be playing so once the field is reduced you could find yourself at some tough tables. Even running average and playing well you can never have a reasonable expectation of finishing itm - but definitely ++++EV

Also WSOP far better than Christmas imo - so nothing wrong with looking forward to it. I cant wait already:) If only Harrahs would hurry up and release the schedule...

Thanks....I hear its being brought forward again, so that might put paid to my idea if I'm going in June....will see what happens...I've set up an account on PPP to donk around with so maybe I'll try to spin that up to $1500, though thats higher than my current bankroll!

Like Lloyd was saying, some of these small side events are supposed to be awful, in particular the $1500 event. A very similar topic to this was posted on the pocketfives forum recently and alot of players who attended the wsop this year advised not to enter this event. There is much better value in the $1000 event at the venetian. The $1500 event turns into a total crap shoot once you get in a few levels. It is the wsop and it's a nice novelty and all to play but i wouldn't waste my time with this tourney.

I have never played a WSOP event but with an hour clock it cant be that bad surely.

I played tourneys in Wynn and Bellagio over there with very small starting stacks but with decent clocks, 45mins+ and there was lots of play all the way through.

The downside is that once you find a hand you pretty much have to go with it as a preflop raise and a c-bet commits you but you have a couple of hours to find one.

The structure's aren't awful, you just don't start with many chips. They have to do it like that so it doesn't go on for 2 weeks. It essentially means that early on it's worthwhile gambling for a double up, but once you get a double up or whatever and the field starts to thin there's a surprising amount of play in these events. That said I think you'd be much better off playing in three smaller $500 non WSOP events in different casinos.

Yeah. The standard in the Venetian $1000+ games are >>>>>> than the WSOP too.
