I'm looking forward to seeing what's happened here. Let's hope the food has improved with the décor.

Am I the only one who misses the atmospheric brick of the old buttery? I also rather liked the way it was sort of dark....adds to the atmosphere...

The new one will take some getting used to!

What are you on about?? Of course s/he has a right to complain about the standard of the food in the buttery, its absolute ****e!! This whole concept of the poor student who has no right to complain at what the world hands him is over. There's nothing wrong with expecting value for your money.

There is alternatives. No one is forcing you to eat there. Bring your own lunch in for example.

Compared to else wher eyou are paying very little so you are getting value for your money

Was down there at lunch and my **** is it bright.

Only problem is theres **** all places to eat your lunch if you bring it i! used to just eat it in the buttery and buy a cup of tea but apparently this year they'll completely cracking down on it!

Have you ever been hassled for eating your lunch in the buttery? For four years I eat mostly homemade lunchs there and none said a word. If they had I would have just told them to call security.

Yes. A few of us were munching away on our rolls (from Spar) when one of the cleaning ladies on her way past plopped down a laminated sheet of A4 paper that informed us that eating food not purchased in the Buttery was expressly forbidden.

That's pretty lame. I hate having to feel like a fugitive while eating my lunch-- how come there aren't more 'picnic' areas around the college that don't make you feel like you're sitting on someone's doorstep, particularly down the hamilton end.

Methinks a piece in the Trinity News is in order?

I was the same but the odd time I got chips beans and sausages. I used to love the custard there and got strange looks ordering only that for lunch.

There is plenty of places to each your lunch in trinity with out having to go the butter.

Is the butter still be operated by a private company?

Can you still get beer there? Up until recently I used to pop in there for a few sneaky with a mate or two before meeting up with the other lads

It is still operated (for now) by Trinity staff and by the catering department - not sure what you mean about it still being private? It's actually the only non-outsourced canteen across the universities....

nope, the bar is closed - and the space has been remodelled, you'd hardly recognise it now!

I thought because the butter was losing money some one was brought in to run it? This is going back to 2003.

I only once ever ate food from the buttery and it was truely terrible. Bad food is never good value.

Yeah it was definitely discussed fairly seriously, but wasn't proceeded with (so it stumbled on through 04/05 and 05/06 still run by Catering). Course, discussions were taking place at the same time (03/04) about the future of the Lincoln and ultimately TCD decided to retain the building but lease it out to Thomas Read.

    What were you expecting?

Anything I've ever had there was perfectly acceptable for the standard of restaurant I was in. I wasnt expecting 4 star food from the Buttery.

Bah. Sausage, beans and chips now 4.10. A harsh blow. I'd prefer them still at 3.85 and no leather couches tbh.

Grr..wanky paninis and wraps and pizza slices..the student special is the usual slop.I asked would there be a "daily special" like they used to have and i was told no,the menu was the same each day except the student special. To illustrate this unwelcome point she rattled the ladle in the liquid. If you want something more substantial ie a chop or a steak or a fillet o' fish,i reccomend you head to the dining hall.

A cynical person might question the point of doing up the Buttery so that we get served the same crap food (and before I get yelled at, that's not me judging; crap, cheap food can be very handy when you need cheap dinners mid-week) in a newer, trendier environment. If you're eating in the buttery, it's because you don't have the time or the money to go anywhere else. Does anyone seriously reckon that circular tables and "funky" metal art on the walls will have students rushing in when they wouldn't have before? I'm also curious as to how many spaces are lost from having that huge cleaning yoke in the middle and having circular tables instead of benches, and whether that might not impact a little on the money-making abilities of the Buttery, especially around lunchtime.

Edit: Plus, I'm assuming we can say goodbye to ceilis, table quizzes and naked slave auctions in the buttery, since there's now much less floor space to be had by pushing the tables back. That seems like a pity, really...

I don't like.. its more expensive and you don't get any more value.

It looks and costs the same as Nude now.. but if I wanted that I'd just go to Nude..

20 cent for ketchup and 30 to get a sandwich toasted- not even O'Briens do that. Pfft.

Yeah, the place looks like something from the movie Tron. It's pretty swish, as someone put it.

as a friend of mine commented, its so wannabe 2.0 (or seattle IT company just before the .crash) and yet doesnt have wireless.

    Why?

Because catering dont want laptops taking up eating space. tools.

The food presentation has improved (nicer plates). But at a cost of...cost!

Prefer cheaper food than well presented cuisine to be honest.

Subway do rolls that fill you up for E5 and hopefully a bit healthier than chips and sausages!

anywhere on campus that you can have lunch + use wireless?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 288 ✭✭EGaffney

Buy a sandwich and bring it to the GMB. I think that's about it.

Arts block - beside the Ed Burke theatre. Plenty of tables and chairs.

Pain in the ass to be honest. It would be quite handy to be able to go get a snack and a cup of coffee and still keep working on campus.

I had quite pleasant chicken pasta with garlic bread for €3.50 in the Buttery today. I was rather pleased with it. That is all I've eaten there since the facelift though.
