    do we need to buy any books for the start of our lectures? persumably we should be told in our course meeting on thursday

    I presume it's the case for all courses, you do not need to buy books. You may be recommended to buy some at some stage. But there's plenty of time 'til and for that. For the time being, just enjoy freshers week.

    There are some books that will be of use to you for more than one lecture course (probably worth investing in an anatomy book, can't remember the recommended one but wait until the lecturers tell you).
