If your being interviewed for a job and they ask what do you expect your salary to be? How do you handle this? And what do you say? Job is graduate software developer.

Depends on the company and what they would offer grads. They all vary a bit.

You need to get in there and start gaining experience, they should offer between 25-28K depending on the company, maybe more maybe less but at this stage in your career you need to get in and get experience under your belt. Dont worry you'll be able to command way more as you gain experience. Theres guys with 3 years on 30-40, 5 years 50-60, depending on the language and its demand. Contracting even more....

Sorry dude I dont know, it depends on the company, I would hope they'd offer you at least 26-28 if you'd done that much.

Well i would be looking for high 20's to low 30's depending how good you are. Big shortage in grads this year so wages have gone up allot. A few places i know now start on 30k

I'd say 30K too. That's what all grads in the company I used to work for (we hired a lot of grad software developers too!) get. If they have a research masters they get more, but a taught masters is not worth anything! Most companies, from research we did, now offer about 28K to 30K. Because you haven't been working full-time before then your salary expectations aren't as important to the recruiter. I would say they'll offer you a set salary the same as the other grads and you'll take it! You can't really argue over your first salary. If they ask you what you expect, the best thing to say is: "well by looking around at other grad roles i would say in the 28K to 30K range". They can't argue with that.

In truth 30k would price you out of a lot of jobs.

Taking the long term view, getting the job and 2 years expericence will mean your on 35-40k in 2 years. so i wouldnt take the short term approach oif asking for too much now, and missing out on a position that your know you want.

    My advice say 'approx 27k'.

True I wouldn't bother about the starting salary (within reason) if the experience is good. I can tell you BOI, AIB and ulster start 29,000 to 30,000 (Plus big benefits). Ericsson is 30,000 and accenture is 33,000. Microsoft was 33,000 last year (so i would say 35 or so this year). Hope that helps
