    Hows it going,
I've just moved to North Tipp but im fairly close to Tullamore, Portumna and Birr. I really want to start a martial art (i used to do Tai Jitsu, i reallt enjoyed it) and although there are Tae Kwon Do and Karate clubs in the area i'm not sure ther what i'm looking. I would love to join a muay thai club but the nearest 1 is Galway (too far).
Can anyone give me advice on Tae Kwon Do or Karate, i don't know much about them but they seem to get a lot of stick in the MMA world. How much of this is valid?

Depends on the school man. If there is an element of heavy-contact sparring, then I'm sure it's practical. Chances are, 90% of karate of tkd schools you'll come across aren't very practical.. If you can find a full-contact kickboxing club, a boxing club or a judo club near to you, then either of these would be a good choice and are all scattered across Ireland.

cheers, nobody even mentioned judo before, but it makes a lot of sense, as you say anything with an element of full contact can't be far wrong!

    Hi gavin,

I live in nenagh. 2 very good full-contact Kickboxing classes nearby. 1 in Birr on wednesday night at 8 in the rugby club, the other is in roscrea on friday nights at 8 in roscrea 2000. I've trained there for many years and its a great workout. Trainers are top notch. If you want more details lets me no. Also good Kickboxing classes in Thurles. The ITF TKD is good in nenagh, WTD there also but thats not my thing. Hope you find what your looking for.

Thanks a million, thats exactly what i'm looking for, something full contact with an emphasis on conditioning! Neenagh and Birr are very handy for me! Cheers!!

The Kickboxing clubs in Roscrea and Birr are under Johnny Ryan the boys there are sound and know there ****, they only grade once a year so you know its not a "Mc DoJO"
good physical, pad work and sparing if your up for it. well worth a go.

That thread is from 2007. Try not to dig up old threads, it pushes relevant ones out.
