It says MT week 4 as the release date but I presume this paper is, or will be, on-campus this week.

Well done to TN, paper looks good as always. (Particularly to David Molloy who wrote at least 4 articles!).

It seems 'The Agent' is gone. I wasn't a fan of the concept but it will certainly make for less excitement among the chattering classes.

The 'Your Money' section is a very good idea.

    The rugby coverage is top-drawer.

New layout is as good as the old one (which was excellent). Quite a lot of space taken by pictures, but it's hard to fill inches when people are still on summer hols.

What do you like about it?

Does reading this paper give you any major brainwaves as to what you think makes a good student paper?

What would you like to see changed, added or removed?

Looks great, very well done. One thing that immediately stood out was the quality of the photographs - not only are there a lot of original photographs rather than file ones, which student papers often end up relying on, but they are really strong photos which look excellent on the pages that they appear on. Hmmm, syntax my not good today is, but basically the photos = v good.

AFAIK there was a serious problem at the printers and TN2 was delayed, but it's due in tomorrow so presume it'll be around campus then.

I didn't know the girl but was shocked at the obituary of that law student who was killed in London a few months ago. I remember seeing her around campus when I was in first year and I always thought she looked so cool and lively-looking. Very sad story.

Well yeah, The Agent is gone but they've been replaced by Evelyn Tent (geddit?) which seems to be serving exactly the same purpose (although am I alone in thinking that it's more vitriolic than The Agent ever was?? I thought that the piece about Andy Byrne in particular was below the belt, if not downright libelous tbh).

Tbh, I've an awful lot of trouble harbouring anything but ill will towards the Trinity News, solely for bull**** like the Agent and Evelyn Tent.

Truth be told I'd consider such behaviour forgivable were it funny. But it just fails miserably at that. I mean, really offensive and insulting things can be really funny. Like brass eye, for example. But the Agent and Evelyn Tent are neither witty, observant nor so over the top that they're funny by virtue of overthetopness.

Evelyn Tent? Lame doesn't even cover it. I'd say it wasn't funny but to be honest since someone spent time writing that (obviously with an intention of being scandalous) it is funny.

Overall yeah it's ok. Few spelling mistakes here and there but mistakes happen.

It hasn't always had them ;)

Excellent, but the mis-spelling on the masthead - "bears"?- is a bit of a shocker.

Looks great, love the layout and everything. Shame its littered with blatant typos that even a cursory glance would have noticed.

Unfortunately a cursory glance can't be had. When you print them out on A4 the font size is about size 4. And there's no spell-checker (or a completely useless one, can't remember) on the program that's needed to lay the page out.

Other than the few typos, it's very well done I thought.

I don't follow.... Why can't somebody proof read it on screen before it goes to press? I mean there were a few typos in big print, never mind the 4 pt stuff

Surely the articles are written in Word or whatever before being put onto the page, it has a spell checker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,626 ✭✭✭Stargal

Articles are almost all written in Word, which of course has a spell-checker, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the writer used it (unfortunately!). There is also a spell-checker in Quark, the programme that is used to lay out TN (but a lot of people don't seem to be aware of that so it isn't always used!).

When each page of TN is laid out, a copy is printed off and at least one person reads over all of the articles and checks it for spelling and grammatical mistakes. Headlines, sub-headlines, photo captions and pull-quotes are different - they are usually just written straight in to the relevant page in Quark (rather than writing it in Word and then moving it across) - so if the person doesn't use the spell-checker then it's possible that spelling mistakes will happen.

I'm not justifying spelling mistakes, just explaining how they can happen. There are a lot of checks in place to make sure mistakes don't get through (spellcheckers in Word and Quark, sub-editor checking everything at least once) but it still happens. Unfortunately.

Good auld Quark Express. I can use that software package, which is pretty rare.

The new anonymous column is woeful. It makes me miss The Agent, believe it or not. At least it was serious and (often) true.

When's the next issue due out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

OK, I went and read it last night. First up, it looks very professional. Unfortunately the glaring spelling mistakes do take away from the beautiful layout. As usual, some articles are stronger than others but that is the way of college publications. Nudity on page 3 was unexpected, is this to be a regular feature? :D

Paper seems OK, but Evelyn Tent is just cack-handed (though I am alluded to in the GMB section, which is borderline flattering). TN seems like it wants to be seen as a mature paper (down to ripping off Irish Times layout tricks wholesale), but having a childish gossip column overshadows any movements made to actually make the paper worth reading.

Evelyn Tent is more abusive than the agent - whoda thought. worse of the lot.
