computer won't restore from standby mode

Can someone help me with my laptop. When I'm not using it i usually put it in standby mode. Last night my computer would not restore from standby mode. All the happened was that the screen showed up black but I could hear the fan running I had to power off the computer for a while and turn it back on again in order for it…
