I am moving to Galway in a week or so and was wondering what the scene is like over there. What are the decent tournaments to head to and whats it like for cash games? I've had a look at the Eglington and 4aces sites but was looking for a better idea of the level of play etc rather than just the buy-in.

    Thanks,

    Jimmii

two clubs ourselves and the four aces

our most popular tourny would be the wednesday night one €115 which gets between 45-70 runners, also the student 10 € rebuys which gets up to 100 runners.

wont comment on standard of play I know its not rated outside of Galway :p but I would be of the strong belief its on a par at least with the rest of the country :) (I would say that though wouldnt I (SO MUCH FOR NOT COMMENTING))

I'll check yourselves out for sure but don't fancy going to a place that uses paint to make there website although maybe i'm wrong! What time does the Wednesday night game normally finish at?

What time do cash games normally get going and what games are spread?

    Thanks,

    Jimmii

I called into the Eglington during race week. Nice set up. Game extremely fishy but maybe that was just due to the week it was!

Been to the 4Aces a few times, not a big fan. I think there's another placer too, not sure

Yeh I thought there were 3 places but can't find the other. Was there a place called the poker lounge was upon a time? I like the sound of fishy games! I'll have to make sure to get the races weekend off to spend every evening in there!

The 3rd club is called the Corrib Casino which is located in the centre of town. It's actually a very nice looking club but there isn't much of a tournament scene at all. I lived in Galway last year and as i remember, there was only one tourney a week which never got any proper numbers. This casino caters more for drunken students who flow out of the niteclubs at about 2am. There's usually a cash game going though most nites, however they can attract some "wild folk"!
The 4 aces is a bit of a dump but is the most consistant for tournaments. Also, check out pokerevents.ie. They a run 120 FO in the westwood hotel every wednesday, aswell as a few bigger entry tounaments every now and again.
    Standard of play.........Meh!

This loose passive stewtard (played well last night!) and a few other Galway boardies play a home NL €25- FO on Monday night at 9:30. 25 min clock. Well run. With lottery like cash games to follow. PM me if interested.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,810 ✭✭✭✭jimmii

The poker events one runs on a 20 minute clock so I think i'll probably pass on that one. I'd be interested in getting involved in a home game though.

Sorry to bring back such an old topic, but I was just talking to my friend who told me she was going for an interview tomorrow in a casino in Galway. I asked was it the Eglington and she wondered how I knew about that place (having never been to Galway) and that it was just a big snooker club with all the poker stuff stored in the girls toilets.

It's hard to argue with someone who said she's been in there on many an occassion, but can anyone tell me if the snooker club is seperate to the card club in any way because she's convinced the Eglinton is all snooker and only part-poker. I find that hard to believe given the website!

Oh and she's going for an interview in a casino in Salthill called Caesars Palace, is it any good?

the eglinton used to be just a snooker hall with some online poker running on computers in the corner. since then they have renovated the place across the hall into a poker club and it is amazing. bout 10 poker tables also with bout 3 40" lcd's usually showing football and other sports and a bar. it is all really great!!:D

The Eglinton is the best casino in Galway imo. The Four Aces is still going, but the Corrib is closed.
Pokerevents don't operate in the Westwood any more, mainly due to the fact that one of the owners of the eglinton is the owner of Pokerevents.
The Eglinton now run the 115 freezeout which is really a continuation of the event that used to take place in the Westwood.
The Eglinton is well put together and a really nice place. The snooker hall is on the same floor of the building but its totally separate to it, they have nothing to do with each other.
Never heard of Caesars Palace in Salthill.

Caesar's Palace is just a slots place IIRC, rows and rows and rows of crappy poker machines filled with the most depressing kind of people you can imagine. That's what it used to be like in any case, haven't known anyone who walked in there in years but the exterior is exactly the same as always. You couldn't pay most people enough to work in there, taking people's dole money via the poker machines would make anyone suicidal.

The Eglinton is a pretty classy card room, considering the size of Galway, somewhat similar to the Sporting Emporium's poker room. Most of the staff there are fairly sound as well.

In fairness, I agree its a nice card room and the staff are good as well, but it doesn't compare to the SE. Lets not get carried away.

There is no doubt that the Eglinton is the best casino in Galway. Fintan runs the place and i often think of it as pokerevents in a casino - Though that's not entirely accurate. it is very well presented establishment. bigger than the jackpot not as big as the SE but probably a little bigger than the downstairs of the Fitz. Dead Money's a year out of date as is Murderer. I don't get to play there as often as I like but the standard in Galway is a lot higher than it was years ago. There are some very good players and some fish same as everywhere. I'll wave a fin in the air.

It should be your first stop when checking out the scene.

I played in the Eginton during race week last week and found the standard of the locals quite appalling. One or two guys were au fait with basic strategy and card sense but the rest are serious value.

My family live in Galway so I spend a bit of time there. The Eglinton is the best club although not as sexy as the Emporium or Maccau but its good. The players are poor and I found they play very tight. The game is a NL 1/3 game with no live straddle. Half the players seem to be young students who are too tight for there own good and the other half are not very good at all. Everyone seems to by in short for 100 or so and are so tight. I bought in for 300 and was raising from position all the time and it seemed to be almost frowned upon by the tight table. Easy game. Dealers are quite talkative, one guy actually likes to commentate on the game as it plays. Its a nice club and I hear the tournaments are generously structured.

This thread is pretty old so i've had a chance to go down a few times. The structures would be really good if they were an online tournament but they aren't so they are pretty poor for a live game. 20 minute blinds for all other than the monthly game (unless the tournaments have changed since November). I played cash 4 or 5 times and its as you say people buying in for 100 and just waiting to try double up. I don't think I had go to showdown all night the first time I played! I didn't bother with the 4aces at all. I'm looking forward to the races to see what its like then.

    PS its not the SE.

An old thread, but hey. Yeah short buyins are a problem esp on fri/sat nights.
Deeper stack play is usually on Wed nights after the tournaments.

Thats interesting to know as i've only been in at weekends. What time does the game usually start at and run until? When you say deep is it €300 or €1000? Be good to play a proper deep game. The few nights i've been down the 2/5 game hasn't even got going I don't think does it get going on Wednesday if so what sort of stacks are people playing there? Cheers!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 57 ✭✭dwayman

usually 300 or so. It depends on the night. I buy in for 500 (max) to set a good example. Haven't had time to go in lately though but there can be a smattering of decent players and people who aren't using half there paycheck for the minimum buy in.....!

I've stopped going on on weekends as the 5 way all ins are hard work.

Tournament is at 8 and is worth a play. cash games going at 10/11.

Would be good to get 2/5 game going. Let Fintan know if your interested.

The Office Bar in Salthill holds a €25 Texas Holdem Freezeout every Thursday night at 8.30pm...It is starting at the later time of 9.30pm when the World Cup is on to allow players enjoy the matches prior... They pay out all cash prizes and the small buy in means you can enjoy a few pints and a good game of cards without spending too much. Last week 1st got €280! 8k starting stack...
