Hi i have one and found it to be great, my Uncle uses it everyday in the States to watch the RTE news and he would be lost without it. Pic quality is better than i thought it would be.

The slingbox Solo and Pro are being released here and in the UK in the next week or two, so if you're going to get one you should probably hang on and get one of those instead of the old Classic version.

Basically it converts the signal coming out of a Decoder, STB, VCR, DVD etc. and sends it across the web as a video stream, from one broadband connection to a PC at the other end. Ideally you'd want 1Mb or more of upload speed for the picture quality to be any way decent - currently only Smart, Magnet, IBB Breeze and UPC offer 1Mb or more upload speed on their broadband packages (may cost extra with some of them to get the 1Mb). And the whole time you're watching, the upload is going to be pretty much maxed out the entire time. At 1Mb upload this is about half a gig UPLOAD at the slingbox side, and another half a gig at the DOWNLOAD side, per hour of watching on the slingbox.

Looks like I have someone who will do the setup. Meanwhile I tried a sample from a UK supplier and the reception is really bad. the streaming rate goes from 400 to below 100 and it freezes etc. I have a 3MB download capacity. Next one up is 8MB. Is it this capacity that's the problem as I don't want to upgrade if that isn't the issue? Thanks

Yes capacity sounds like an issue at the slingbox side but it is not download that is important, it's upload. You could have as much download as you like but if your upload is very low then the quality of picture which the broadband will be able to carry will still be rubbish.

Ideally, you are looking for a minimum of 512Kbps UPLOAD on the slingbox side. If you want to use this connection (at the slingbox side) for streaming alongside other internet usage, aim for higher still. What are the upload speeds for the 3Mb and 8Mb packages you mention?

Thanks Kensington. Just so I'm clear - the important thing seems to be the 512 kb upload speed. Am I right in thinking this is only important at the end where the slingbox is ie the transmitting end or do you need such an upload speed at the receiving/viewing end as well? Therefore with 512kb uploading and 3MB downloading it should work?

Uploading is only important at the slingbox end. The internet needs to be able to SEND (upload) as much data out as possible (more data = better picture quality). Very little receiving is actually done at this end so download isn't important here.
Download is only important at the end you'll be watching the stream from. The internet at that end needs to be able to RECEIVE the data as quickly as it is being sent out from the slingbox end. In all likelihood though, the download speed at the receive end will be greater than the upload speed at the slingbox end so download shouldn't be an issue :)

On a 3Mbps down / 512Kbps at the slingbox side, the slingbox should give fairly good results. If the internet connection to which your slingbox is hooked up to is used for a PC/other devices, then it may effect viewing while these devices are actually using the internet connection.
