    Hey all,

My DVD drive has vanished from My Computer!!

It appears in the BIOS alright. And in device manager it says there's a problem with the driver - it couldn't be loaded\could be corrupt. I'm using the standard MS cdrom.sys driver.

    Any ideas?

Get onto the manufacturers support page so, maybe you need to use a different driver.

Completely uninstall the device and restart and let windows detect it and reinstall?

Tried that....it reinstalls but it still says the device driver could not be loaded. I replaced the cdrom.sys file with a fresh copy but that didn't make any difference either

    Windows XP?

    Fix for missing DVD/CD drives.

Create a text file with NOTEPAD containing the following data exactly as below and name it FIXCD.REG
You should have 3 boxes on the bottom in NOTEPAD.
    1)Filename : fixcd.reg
    2)Save as type: all files
    3)Encoding: ANSI
If you do not change it from txt type to All files type, then the file will actually be fixcd.reg.txt, this won't accomplish the desired result

Double click on the file and say yes to the merge into registry question.

Use text after this line, contents of FIXCD.REG
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
    "UpperFilters"=-
    "LowerFilters"=-

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2K]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdralw2k]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdudf]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UdfReadr]
    Use text before this line

I had this problem just recently where one of my DVD drives was showing up but it just wouldn't run or open. The light on the front would flash a bit and it showed up in the manager but it just wouldn't work. I uninstalled it and re-installed it but nothing would work. After a while I decided to open up my case to see if anything was loose. I have a case fan plugged into the same power lead that goes to this drive. I took that out and put the power lead straight into the drive and that solved the problem. It may not be the problem your getting but you might want to try it if nothing else works. To be honest though, I have a crappy PSU so that doesn't help!

Does it say "Code 39", in the error message?

    Hey,

Ya, it's a Code 39. Do you know what that means?

I was told it could be something to do with a field in the registry - to do with upper and lower filters.

Yeah, we get this alot at work. If it's XP, click Start, Run, regedit and then click OK. If it's Vista, click Start, and in the "Start Search" box, type regedit and then press enter.

    Once in the Registry Editor...
Click the [+] or triangle (depends if you're in XP or Vista) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click the [+] or triangle (depends if you're in XP or Vista) next to System
Click the [+] or triangle (depends if you're in XP or Vista) next to CurrentControlSet
Click the [+] or triangle (depends if you're in XP or Vista) next to Control
Click the [+] or triangle (depends if you're in XP or Vista) next to Class
and then click the box which starts with {4D36E965-E325

Once you click said box, look to the right, and you'll see Upper or Lower Filters. Delete them both. If you only see one or the other, doesn't matter. If none are there, this may not be the case, or you're looking in the wrong box.

Once you do this, go into Device Manger, and uninstall your DVD Drive.

Then restart your PC. Once your PC restarts, your PC will find and install your DVD Drive correctly.

We (at work) have found this usually occurs after the user installs camera software. We don't know why the camera software does this, but the above fix fixes it.
