PCI Modem Kidnapped my sound settings.

I've just installed a new PCI data/fax/voice modem (For faxing purposes) & it's working the finest.

The problem is that everytime I restart my PC it decides to make itself the defaults for my sound.

I then have to go to the sound properties in control panel & set them back to my on-board sound settings. Everything work dandy until I restart & the modem does its kidnapping act again.....

Anyone know how this could be nailed without paying any ransom?

Select the sound card in Sound and Audio Devices and tick 'Use only default devices', see if that does anything.

I've already tried that Ruu, but no joy.

    Thanks anyway.

I just went into the Windows Device Manager & looked at what was listed under the sound properties. The modem is listed there & when I double click it it gives me a "Properties" option & in there is the option to put a check mark in a box that says "Do Not Map through this device"
I wonder if that could be the problem?

    Remove both from device manager.

Shut down PC and remove both cards.

    Start PC.

Shut down PC and fit Modem to slot the sound card is currently in

    Start PC

    Install Modem

Shut down PC and fit sound card

Start PC and install sound card

    that should sort it.

The 7.1 surround sound system is onboard... It's not a separate card.

Point taking, I can see where you got confused ;)

Original post has been edited to reflect that the sound is on-board....

Have you any software loading at startup that needs to access sound in any way? Like Skype or a logitech webcam?

Go through the Logitech setup wizard again. Thats the wizard you probably went through after installing the camera for the first time. Iirc, it can be accessed by right clicking on the Logitech icon in the system tray. When you get to the 'Sound' part of the wizard, make sure that all the sound options are set to your onboard sound card and not the modem.

That should solve it. If it doesn't, go through the Skype settings and make sure nothing is set to the modem audio.

The camera doesn't seem to be the culprit.....

OK I'm starting to chase this problem around. Initially the modem was hijacking my sound properties so I thought to myself, well, OK, the modem was the last device installed so maybe that's why it decided to take up residence in my sound properties? so I decided to do a bit of "Reverse Installing"

I totally removed the onboard sound drivers from the device manager, my logic being that on a restart Windows would find the onboard sound & install the drivers so that would mean that the onboard sound would be the last device installed.......

    So here's what happened....

On startup windows found the onboard sound & installed the drivers.

I restarted the system & jes*s!!! now my USB cordless Skype phone is doing the hijacking.

    Any ideas?
