Cannot access http://192.168.1.1 and other Linksys WRT54GS problems?

I'm trying to set up a Linksys WRT54GS on Irish Broadband. So far I followed the quick installation cd and have the router connected to my pc and IBB modem. I entered my ip address, subnet mask, gateway, primary and secondary dns settings chose WPA Personal security. All seems to be right at this end.

I was wondering how to change settings etc because there is no actual software installed on the pc, so I read the manual which said to connect to http://192.168.1.1 to configure it. I've tried IE & Firefox but it won't connect, I turned off my firewall and antivirus but I still can't connect. Can anyone help?

My xbox 360 can pick up the signal upstairs and connect to my network, when I type in the password but fails at connecting with the IP address. Actually once (out of 15 attempts) it connected with the IP address but failed at the primary dns.

    I'd appreciate any help.

I would leave the IP and DNS at automatic first of all unless you have a reason for assigning them both. Check your dos prompt to see if your computer is connected to the linksys. Start>run>cmd>enter and type "ipconfig" and check your IP address starts with 192.168.x.x, your sub net mask, is there and default gateway.

IF post a a screen shot if your not sure of the dos window.

    I did that and got
    Windows IP Configuration

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

    Connection Specific DNS suffix:
    IP ADDRESS: 192.168.X.XXX
    SUBNET MASK: XX
    DEFAULT GATEWAY: XX

    IP ADDRESS: 192.168.X.XXX
    SUBNET MASK: XX
    DEFAULT GATEWAY: XX

They are internal network addresses for a home network. No need to X them out.
Only one that you should keep private is the Irish broadband modems external IP.

The values on your PC should be something like
    IP ADDRESS: 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.253
    SUBNET MASK: 255.255.255.0
    DEFAULT GATEWAY: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 192.168.1.1 or that provided by IBB.

Now, if the PC was previously connected directly to the irish broadband modem, then it's settings might not match the above.
If your PC is set to automatically acquire an ip address then typing ipconfig /renew should have it.

Then you should be able to connect to the router from the PC, and start diagnosing the other issues.

Guys I managed to somehow get my xbox 360 online through the router but I still cant access from my pc http://192.168.1.1/

I started the whole process again.

IBB gave me a sheet with my ip, subnet mask, gateway, primary and secondary dns years ago.

When I go to command prompt and type ipconfig I get
    Windows IP Configuration

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

    Connection Specific DNS suffix:
    IP ADDRESS: 192.168.2.100
    SUBNET MASK: 255.255.255.0
    DEFAULT GATEWAY: 192.168.2.1

The above IP, SUBNET AND GATEWAY all differ from those on the sheet IBB gave me. So which IP, Subnet and gateway should I enter when setting up my router?

I appreciate any advice as I am very lost tbh.

    Hi Nephew
Use the settings from IBB for setting up your router. The router should then give you a different 192.x.x.x type ip address which is fine.

The thing is though if you have an ip address of 192.168.2.100, then the router setup page should be at http://192.168.2.1/

Maybe you could try that from your pc?

Thanks a million, Radioactiveman. I can access the configuration at http://192.168.2.1/

I disabled ssid broadcasting so my router will require a slight bit of effort for anyone trying to sponge off it. What else should I do as it's all Dutch to me.

You could set up WPA encryption if you want to make sure nobody will get access to it but that's it really if it's connecting ok to webpages;)

Thanks again. All I'll be using it for is my pc, an xbox 360 and a laptop.

Is there any way I can view what's connected to it, how much bandwidth that device is using and to allocate a certain amount of bandwidth to individual devices.

hi not unless you use a program for that, or you might have those features on your router - but most routers don't have that. The most they'll show you is who is connected and put it in a log.

Actually that router does support what you require... it is called QoS or Quality of Service.

It is under Applications & Gaming. You can assign bandwidth allocations by Ethernet Port,MAC Address or just for particular ports.
