Buy at educational price have the package for as long as you keep it, no need to register.

As for the other part of the question... sorry... ill have to leave that to someone who uses Office!

what's the situation with licensing for the student version do you've to re-register it each year or once you have it that's if for life?

Have you considered any of the other office packages ? My personal favorite is NeoOffice as it doesn't need X11 and keeps the Apple look and feel.

There's also OpenOffice.org which is also great put doesn't maintain the Apple look and feel with regards to menus. But hey they're both free so mustn't grumble eh ?

Its a Microsoft site so its perfectly legit and its still fully licenced when you graduate. http://www.software4students.ie/faq.htm#q7

Personally, I go with iWork, quite like Keynote, Pages isn't bad either but I use Bean mostly as an alternative to Word.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between Office and Office student edition?

I'm waiting for Office '08 in January and my main reason for getting it over any other software is so that my documents are interoperable with Windows PCs. However, I was looking at the link below to the Apple Store and it has this to say:
Which one is best for you?

Need to showcase your genius, do amazing presentations or efficient calculations for non-professional use, write your master thesis or simply chat with friends? Check out Office for Mac Student & Teacher Edition.
Whether you use a Power-PC or Intel-Based Mac, you can install it on three computers in your household at a very special price. Get more details and check eligibility qualifications: click here.

Need to create documents that you can seamlessly share with any Mac or Windows user - from your neighbours down the street to friends around the world? Need to keep on communicating and sharing while you’re travelling? Discover Office for Mac Standard Edition. Whether you use a Power-PC or Intel-Based Mac, you can install it on your desktop computer and on one laptop computer for your exclusive, but non-concurrent use.

Can I assume if I get the student version I won't be able to share my files with PC users?

I use the student edition and have never had any issues with files reading files from PC users, if it of any use to you.

As far as I can see, there is no difference in features between the full-priced version and the student and teacher edition (I've used both, in the 2004 version).
