    Hi guys,

just a few random photos I've taken in the last while - would like your opinions on how I could have framed/cropped/photoshopped/snapped better.

Of course, telling me what you liked about the photos wouldn't be unappreciated either ;)

Last two really caught my eye, fantastic stuff and very sharp.

    Hi.

Some stunning work there. I'll make a few comments, but in general, if you're asking what we would recommend in terms of cropping, for example, it'd help, on occasion, if we had the originals for comparison. Just saying - you don't have to do it.

that being said, I don't think there is anything wrong with the cropping at all. I think 1 and 4 are near perfect.

2 is difficult. I might have cropped a little more off the right if it were me.

3 and 5 I have no comments on as far as cropping is concerned.

1 and 3 - these look to me as if the horizon is very slightly tilted to the left. You may want to check these. The colours in 3 are gorgeous.

Beautiful photographs and thanks for sharing.

all great photos - well done

I would suggest cropping them a bit to give greater impact. Maybe less sky in one or two to bring it a tighter cropped picture.

If you can remove the out of focus mark to the left of the bird then that would focus more on the bird in that photo

all in all thought - well done and great photos

The OOF mark was another seagull (there were around 25 of them swooping around the seaside - a bit concerned about my camera and clothes actually!)

Looking at 1 and 3 - they do seem a bit crooked don't then? Always had a problem with level horizons!

These were all taken on the Nikon D40 with either the 18-55 kit lens or 55-200vr lens.

I agree about cropping more off number 2 - this pic was saved in a 5x7 format for printing and shifting the crop to the left would have been bad too. But I do agree that half a wheel sticking out of the right isn't great cropping.

Are any of the photos "interesting" in your opinion? What do you guys go for when doing landscape/streetscape/portrait/wildlife photography? I've seen some really stunning photos posted here over the last few years...

Ah no, we're all very friendly! I don't post my horrible shots because I know what's wrong with them...whereas these shots which I think are good (for my standard) are posted so I can learn how to take better ones from more experienced people.

Any particular photo stand out for you Rory?

The last one is stunning. I also like the first one as well. Great pic's.

    1, 3 and 5 I like

the sharpness of 5 is stunning

no 2 does not really doing anything for me

    4 I like its a good portrait

3 love the contrast of the red and the blue I would look at cropping it so the surfer is equi distant from bottom and the top (But it could also mess it up - rule of thirds and all that) that would be the only suggestion I would have on cropping

but I think you are doing great on your own:D

I like the last one but maybe not cropped as much

the portrait is great and you can sense the feelings in her eyes

the surfing one reminds me of my holidays where I visited venice beach recently !

    Daniel,
Pic1: I'm sick of seeing those damn things, they've been shot so many times! However, I've never seen silt/sand before!
Pic2: Excellent if that one guy wasn't looking at the camera.
Pic3: Too much blue, but I see what you were getting at.
Pic4: Strange but good. Nothing but a blank expression though.
Pic5: Very sharp, reminds me of an old-aged bad mood bird. Excellent. The other bird in the distance really makes a difference.

Thanks for the comments - I'll keep them in mind for further photos :)

The bay in front of the chimneys is completely dry during low tide - you find people walking their dogs on it.

Rory - you'd prefer to see more of the right in the last photo? Or more vertically?

You can get beaches both to the north and south of them. I have many photographs of them shot from Dollymount Strand.

Fine work. I particularly like the seagull.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,048 ✭✭✭RoryW

if seagull has more to the left it shows a path to be travelled and if to the right, it shows a path travelled . and having it less cropped and more sky all round shows the seagull more in its own environment and may give even greater impact for a great photo

    if that makes sense ?

What makes the bird photograph so stunning is the level of detail in the bird, I would say. Pushing it further back from where it flies now I think would remove that feature.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,048 ✭✭✭RoryW

depends on how big the photo is printed i suppose and yes i agree the level of detail is superb

I think no.2 is fantastic and I'd print it as big as possible. I just love the resigned expression of the guy on the left.

I actually like 2, even with the man looking at the camera - his expression is great. The sharpness on the bird is fantastic. There's not much more you could do with it.
