Would anyone care to explain to this newbie?

basically old console games are downloaded onto the wii's internal memory from the shopping channel and can be played as normal... are you looking for more detail?

You can pay for them by credit card through the shopping channel or buy wii points in game shops. You are best to get your Wii points from gamestop since they are the only place selling them at the correct price of 20 euros for 2000.

As for the best games:

Bomberman 93: gets the most play time at wii parties than anything else, superb multiplayer but poor single player

Gunstar Heroes: Don't miss out on this game, it's an amazing display of destruction

Zelda link to the past and Ocarina of Time: If you haven't played them yet you have no excuse.

Mario 64, Paper Mario, Super Mario World and super mario bros.
Super Metroid: top 3 best game ever for me, out in october
F-zero and F-zero X
Waverace
Streets of Rage
Street Fighter 2 Turbo

I'll check some of them out. Managed to get gamecube controllers and some classic games like metroid prime, mario sunshine, viewtiful joe, zelda windwaker, mgs:sons of liberty and eternal darkness. looking for mariokart next!

GC memory cards are for GC games.
Everything else is handled by internal memory (and can be backed up to SD card)
